So everyone gets mail from useless "honor" societies. But this one actually seems to be legit? Anyone have experience/knowledge to share--is phi beta kappa worth joining?

If it's the only one you're doing, why not. If you have 10 others already then who the hell cares.

I didn't bother joining anything else. Why not? Well I'm a cheapass, and that's $75 I could put toward a new computer or some such. But if phi beta kappa on my resume is like "Hey look, I earned a cookie!" then so be it.

I would join Phi Beta Kappa if I could. I always assumed everyone knew what it was, and therefore was something worth joining. Go for it!

Phi Beta Kappa is typically capped at top 10% and is the one honor society that actually indicates distinguished achievement at the undergrad level. May I ask which school this is at?

Oh neat, so this honor society seems to be for real... cool.

KKR, this is at MIT. I'm studying aerospace engineering & math, so PBK must've picked me up from the math end of things. I was somewhat surprised to get mail from a society for the liberal arts and sciences, lol.

I got it do. I was originally not going to do it, but then my Dad's boss told me I was a dumbass if I didn't...so I did. It will help me a lot on my resume since I'm lazy when it comes to service or organizations.

Unless you subscribe to the "connections are everything" theory, I wouldn't touch any fraternity with a ten foot pole. In my experience, fraternities and sororities are insular elitist organizations at best. At worst the self entitlement and "Daddy's money" or Alumni "gift" pressure to get away with hand slaps for stunts that would put the average person behind bars.

I joined it (Houston CC) and its ok...don't think there are any frat houses though.

They keep sending me emails like "You can volunteer here...or there....or lets go vote for officers....or lets march in the March of Babies...blah blah blah"

they also are like "Buy our cool rags!"

my prof told me that they wil lgive me $500 just for transferring from HCC to University of Houston.

I got a lot of emails from them over the past couple of years since I was in the top whatever % my junior and senior years. I thought about joining, then went on a bunch of job interviews, and no one ever mentioned my lack of honors or organizations listed on my resume, and got offers, so I never bothered. I figure after my first job out of college, it would matter even less, if at all then. For you, tough to say. A lot of people might say you'd be stupid not to join, but it could just as well be completely pointless.

For tech jobs an honors society based on high GPA won't help, you get the benefit from the GPA itself.

My dad's a member of Phi Theta Kappa... I honestly have no idea what the point is for a settled, non-student person like him. Honor?

Maybe if:
- there are society meeting and you actually attend them
- people hiring also attend those meetings and you can talk to them to make an impression

But just joining the society and not doing anything else won't help since you already have the GPA on your resume.

At least not for software development hiring at my last two companies, for business hiring it might impress someone.

No arguments there.

Just my opinion that all Fraternities are sheltered play grounds for snots with too much money. I once had a student body president and member of one of these Honor Societies who compared the difficulties faced by older students finding affordable daycare to the work she put in for keeping two horses while attending school. :|

After attending 3 universities and experiencing the same inability on behalf of Fraternities/Sororities (both Honor based and not) to grasp what the majority thought important while reading with outrage the latest scandal regarding rape/theft/property damage/drugs/underage drinking by fraternal members swept under the rug, I have formed the opinion that these organizations are more successful at labeling their members at lowlife bitches who should be slapped at every opportunity. Screw the Greeks (save the Retsina, Grappa and Ouzo).
