Can anyone from Sheffield or surrounding area please recommend me some telecom providers. I am going to be moving there soon (from the US) and I have just been told that the telecom has been deregulated, and it is not just BT anymore.

Alternatively, can anyone tell me a service provider comparison webpage? Difference in prices, etc...?

Thanks very much!!!!

I used to live near Sheffield, in a town called Rotherham. There's a great mall there. Meadowlands or something like that. Supposed to be the biggest one in Europe. Not much else to see though.

Yeah, I've heard of the mall. Not too much into malls myself...

I am so used to having all the information on my fingertips, or at least on google... Finding phone companies in England is harder than finding a stash of... you know what

I think you mean Meadowhell. full of screaming kids and zig-zaging old grannies!

There are many providers in Sheffield, some will give you free phone calls, some unlimited access to the internet, and then some places in sheff are on cable, so that would be the better way to go,
try NTL, and Blueyonder.

can't be much more help a few years since i lived there, but i ask

Hey, those were great links... Thanks!!!!

Unfortunately, neither NTL or telewest (linked from NTL) serve my future Zip code...

Um, shameless bump.
The webpage I found was not all that helpful...

Apart from the original questions (who is a good provider in Sheffield), I should add the following.

This is for S10 - apparently, not all providers have service there.

Does anyone know, if Wight Cable is available outside the Isle of Wight? (probably not, but who knows)
I am very interested in one of those broadband phone connections, as I was planning on getting something like DSL anyway.

Right now, I can only reasonably find the BT infos... *Sigh*

I've just moved to S11 - I went with BT in the end.

Like you I tried NTL and terriblewest - but having used NTL in the past (just after they took over Cambridge Cable), I'd be hard pushed to go back to them.

If you can't get cable in your area then the chances are you will have a BT line. You can register with someone like OneTel if you want to do a lot of international calls, i think it's 3p/min to the USA.
If it's mobile phones that you are looking for then take a look here. They have plans for all the major networks, all of which have something like 99% coverage across the country.

Also, if you can't get cable then this is a good resource for ADSL.

Hah, I just needed to wait for the right people to come online.

Thanks guys, this is the info I needed.

BT is not toooooo bad, so I may just go for them. I was surprised to see that there are free local calls now in England. How cool is that???

Actually, BT offer free off-peak national calls if you get their together package (well, they're only free for the first 60 mins, after which they are chargeable, - so you just hang up and redial). BT together also has the other advantage that there is no minimum contract period (I think some of their other options require a min of 6 moths or 1 year).

The other advantage I found to BT is that you get reliably free internet dial-up - some of the other phone companies will charge for the supposed free numbers (or not connect them) used by 'Anytime' providers, such as BTopenworld, freeserve and others.

Also, BT offer ADSL in most of sheffield - NTL and telewest (blueyonder) don't.

If you want to make a lot of international calls, then there are lots of 'dial-through' numbers - you dial a non-geographic 'local rate' number, which will then connect you to the number of your choice (e.g. you can call the US for 1p/min). See http://website.lineone.net/~iceburn/telecomuk.html for details.

As for mobiles - orange and vodafone have the best national coverage. O2 is in 3rd place, and T-mobile in comparison is pretty poor. In town, all offer close to 100% coverage, but conversly if you go out to the peak district national park just 5 miles out to the West, then no network has any coverage in the most scenic areas.
