My thoughts about PIII vs. Athlon would be Athlon is the better of the two. Also they are cheaper but the motherboards are a little more. Athlon has FSB speeds of 200 or 266 compared to the PIII 100 or 133 FSB speeds.

Before when Athlon was only 100FSB then the P3 was about equal in performance... with the 133 (266DDR) bus the Athlon wins it all. Plus AMD is cheaper so its win/win.

The good thing about athlons is that it gives you freedom to adjust either the multiplier or FSB with a little mod of course unlike the P3 where changing multiplier was close to impossible.

you also have to remember the 128K of L1 on the Thunderbirds as compared to only 32K of L1 on a PIII. that's why some apps "supposedly" runs faster on an Athlon. considering the programs looks for data in L1 first before going to L2, the chances of a 'cache hit' is far less on an Athlon (400% chance of increased success).

Here we go again......everyone knows athlons are better performance and value than P3s

Edit: I OC-ed my athlon 1ghz to 1.1 using crappy coolermaster and temp hardly changed.....under load also. Of course I plan to get better cooling and OC higher....

yes, amd is by far cheaper than intel. But, maybe if you're planning a whole new system. What if you wanna upgrade? Can you keep the rest of your hardwares and use it with amd mobo and processor?
Just wondering, because i'm thinking of upgrading my system.

Pinoy, AMD stated in a review that the new chips that are coming out should work in boards that are out now, like the Asus A7V133. Unlike Intel, AMD isn't going to change sockets, instead, they're going to continue to use the Socket A setup.

Kenson, if you want better/faster Internet, go with Intel. LMAO!!! Just kidding there. AMD is da bomb. It's fast, cheap, and ultra stable. I haven't seen my system hang/crash once since I got my NIC problem all fixed up. (NIC in PCI 2 conflicted, so PCI 1 works fine.) The bus speed is 2x that of the fastest Intel P3, so there's already another boost. AMD has less characters to type out, so that's why I like AMD more than Intel.

Go A M D!

P3 is a dead-end platform. As said by everyone here, AMD is a faster/less expensive solution.

Bang for the buck--Athlon--hands down!! The 800 chip is around $100, and will hit a gig (in most cases), PLUS the flexibility to change the multiplier (when unlocked) is awesome.

I have the Abit KT7A-Raid with a T-Bird 800@1064, GlobalWin FOP32-1, WW BIOS, everything in BIOS set for max. performance....VERY stable...highly recommend....just get quality PC-133 RAM.

As a sidenote, I have a AMD Duron 650@891...without even trying (cost me $47)...I'm flyin' the AMD flag
