Definitely Pink Floyd. I think they have more of a timeless quality, whereas Zep more captures the essence of rock in a specific period.

Impact? Pink Floyd were one of the most important pioneers of electronic music, helping give birth to an entire genre.

'Cept Zep wasn't a rock band... They were more a blues band that got popular off a few rock hits. They did bridge the gap with a lot of their stuff, but that's part of what made them great.

What? Zep was def a rock band and it may sound like blues to you because well rock is blues based. They were even called heavy metal back when they came out and are credited in creating metal along with bands like Black Sabbath and Cream.

Neither, for my hard rock dollars I go for "In-a-gadda-davida" by Iron Butterfly.

FYI jimmy pages riffs PIONEERED almost all HEAVY METAL that u listen to today, also the use of distortion and other effects (he made it popular) to really bring out that hard rock sound that page had.

LZ I is almost entirely a blues album. II was blues with a rock edge. III was an experimental, almost floyd-esque album. IV was mostly rock yeah, but still heavily influenced by blues.

They started with blues, they were influenced by all blues musicians, but had a few good hard rock songs that everyone knows. Go listen to the non-hits and see what I'm saying.

Just like the doors really...

Dude...don't make these guys fight! They were two great bands, with two very different types of music.

Jimmy Page is my man though----

Stairway=greatest song ever

stairway is overrated.

9/10 tops.

true...one of the cleaner songs from zep if i should say...solo is very clean but not amazing...but if u really want good zeppelin, go get any of there live stuff...all the improv is amazing...thats how u know if a band is really good or not...a ton of modern day bands depend on studio production and sound like pure shat on stage.

THIS is the ONE AND ONLY TIME I will use QFT----as the above statement is absolutely true. I prefer to listen to live recordings, and Zeppelin is one of the most amazing improv bands ever. If you can get your hands on their How the West Was Won DVD, get out "How Many More Times" on the first DVD. The grooves they come up with are amazing!

The songs in LZ I are what got them called Rock/Heavy Metal. Especially Dazed and Confused, Communication Breakdown and Good Times Bad Times. "You Shook Me," and ?I Can?t Quit You Baby" were the 2 Dixon covers they had on there which they changed up quite a bit. I think you forgot that blues and rock go hand in hand with slight differences in song forms, tempo and rhythm. Rock has its heavy-handed drums (i.e Bonzo bass drum), blaring rhythms and loud distorted guitars. All the 60's and 70's guitarists pretty much idolized the early American blues players so you can hear heavy influences by them. Straight up blues were guys like B.B King, Albert King, Muddy Waters, T-Bone Walker and I wouldn't put Zep as anything like that.

And they have quite more then "a few" hard rock songs. Listen to Rock and Roll, Black Dog, Whole lotta love, Immigrant Song, Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp, Heartbreaker, Living Loving Maid, Achilles Last Stand and so many more. I don't know what "hits" you're talking about either they only had a handful of singles released which were all done without their consent. They were one of the first bands that refused to do this and promoted album rock

I don't love either one (or, more precisely, I'd love Led Zeppelin a whole lot more if Stairway to Heaven and a handful of other songs had never been written), but Led Zeppelin is worlds better than Pink Floyd in terms of not being so constantly, annoyingly pretentious.

I agree... Pink Floyd's only "great" albums were Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall (which was a greatest hits, basically).
Led Zeppelin's "greats" were:
I
II
III
IV
Houses of the Holy
The Song Remains the Same
Also, look at the impact Led Zeppelin still has today. Stairway to Heaven is still considered the best classic rock song of all time... and their songs are used in numerous marketing campaigns (to target the retiring generation, probably).
Actually, Floyd hit their peak with 4 albums (IMO): DSOTM, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall. Their other albums are pretty good too. Also, The Wall is in NO WAY a "greatest hits" album, not sure what you're talking about It's a concept album...
EDIT: Just remembered what my sig is after posting in this thread (again)
You disagree with me, then steal my sig... BAD!
