I purchased a pirated XP-Pro, and would like to I be able to just upgrade my existing system with an original copy?? I called Microsoft, and the responder didn't seem to know what I should do. Can someone tell me how I go about resolving this.

Would I be better off waiting for new Windows that may be out soon. How much is the original now.

You can do upgrades, although if its XP Pro to XP Home upgrade, it wont happen.

If its XP Pro to XP Pro (retail) then you can do an upgrade, letting you use your original copy's legal key.

Do a repair install of the legit XP over your pirated XP. You'll have to reinstall all your security updates.

Really depends on which version he installed.

If you installed the Devils Own version using the FCKGW or whatever key, then yes, you are fairly screwed with patching the OS.

Still, there are VLK (Volume License Key) versions out there that have legit keys or stolen keys that will work and SP1 and SP2 do little to no checking against the key. Mostly because VLK editions never need activated. They are mostly reserved for people like me in corporate environments who image large fleets of computers using 1 license. Microsoft kinda leaves you on the honor system that you don't use the key too many times.

But I diguress....

If you re-install or do a repair with the legal copy, I think it should be ok. It really boils down to your license key. There are apps out on the web that will allow you to swap keys. Search and Ye shall find. The only gotcha I can think of is if you installed a retail version of XP and cracked the activation process. If so, a fresh install is the only way to be sure you are Kosher.

You do not need to reinstall. Microsoft released a tool that can change the actual windows key. This was when SP1 would not install on pirated versions.

Do a search on Microsoft and then you can just change the key to your legit copy and you should be fine.

If his pirated edition is a "corporate" version, he won't be able to buy a legitimate key for it, thus he'll need to do a repair install.
