Just got my new 15gig ipod today. Opened the packaged and admired the rediculously sexy ipod. Played around with it a little bit as I was setting everything up. Found the cable and plugged everything in. And then I realized that it only came with a firewire cable! My computer doesn't have firewire. I looked around, thinking that its impossible that it only comes with firewire. But didn't find anything. Then I looked on the manual and it said that the usb cable was optional!!! Look on their website, and found out that the usb cable is $19!!! DAMN. How can apple ship the ipod to pc users and not ship a usb cable with it!!! I realize firewire is probably the superior interface, but there are probably 10x more pc users that have usb, and not firewire! Damnit, now I'm stuck with a really expensive paper weight until I get a firewire interface card!

You need to stop and think about who manufactured this. Apple is king of firewire.

Kinda like when you buy a printer and no cables are included. You shoulda read fine print better

FW is quicker than USB or USB2 anyway, so suck it up and get a $10 FW card

Damn them for using a faster interface! You sure you don't want a serial cable? them you could hook it up to your 486.

You can't just plug in a normal usb cable into the IPod. It takes a special cable, and you can only get it from Apple. I realize I should've read the fine print more closely, but couldn't APPLE at least included a usb cable for the pc IPODS, because I'm sure they know that 90% of the pc users have usb, and a much smaller percentage have firewire! Besides, if I bring the ipod to someone else's computer, I would be out of luck if that person didn't have firewire, if I didn't get the usb cable for the Ipod.

I'm definitely going to be a fw card instead of the cable. Where can I get it for $10?

Firewire is evidently faster even compared to USB 2.0 so there is probably no sensible purpose to provide USB connectivity as a standard. Do the practical thing, upgrade.

I didn't check before I bought mine either. Luckily I found my pc does have a firewire port. I easily could have been in your situation.
