Ok, so the tricky part is getting the Alpha into direct contact with the core, eh? Hmmm... */me puts on thinking cap...

You know, I used to be a bicycle mechanic. We had to think outside the box a lot So how about this concept: instead of the conventional method of mounting the standoffs in the mobo and putting the springbolts down through the heatsink...

  • put the springbolts through the motherboard from the underside so their threaded ends are sticking up from the mobo (probably would need some washers under their heads???)
  • drop the heatsink onto them
  • slide the springs down the bolts
  • add enough small washers to take out the 2mm of missing heatspreader depth
  • use a deep 1/4" socket to snug the standoffs down from the fan side of the heatsink, as nuts, until they bottom out. You might have to bend the closest heatsink pins to the sides a little to get the socket in there.

End result, the springs are compressed to the usual extent thanks to the extra washers/spacers you have added before screwing the standoffs onto them. Eh?

Pretty good idea mechBgon, that might work for my Swifty...it's on there and my temps are great, I just don't like how it's on there....

Because my BD7II couldn't run a 1:1 memory ratio above a 166MHz FSB (no matter what timings I used) I used that FSB speed as the starting point for my Granite Bay overclocking.

I'm thinking you had a bad board. I'm using the BD7-II and I have run it at 172 FSB for weeks with the 1:1 ratio, aggressive timings with two sticks (512 MB each) of Corsair PC3200 Cas2. I know I could go higher but didn't want to push the Vcore past 1.70. Btw this is on a 1.6a chip.

At any rate I'd take your new GB board anyday. Those are some mighty nice scores on the ram bandwidth.

How did you get on with that P4-M? Did you make it past 200MHz FSB? I'll be amazed (and delighted) if you did!!

What goes wrong exactly? I thought you could select up to 200MHz (in 1MHz steps) in the BIOS? The TBreak review hit a maximum 170MHz FSB with their 235MHz-capable unlocked P4 but they didn't mention a specific bug.

Hope you can get it sorted, maybe a new Beta BIOS will do the trick?

I get to 175 just fine. 176 is a bust. Nothing at all. Definatley could be fixed with bios, IMHO.

I've seen a couple of instances where people have got their GA-8INXPs above 175MHz. One guy hit 200MHz and a hardware site (using the F2 BIOS) reached 183MHz, you can read about that here (scroll to the bottom of the page). Have you got some ASIII or something on that MCH HSF? What's on there at the moment?

I have nothing on it of my own. I have not even taken the hsf off. I relaly doubt it is heat related. I can't even get to the bios. It does not even try to boot at 176. I believe it has to do with the bios AND the p4m. I had my 2.4b c1 at 167 fsb no problem. Wish I had an es chip to test it further.

The board is now up to $510 with 10 minutes left to go in the auction. I think I'll just take another hit of the crack pipe and buy it. NOT!!!

Do you think it would make any difference in cpu temp moving the 2 corsair 512mb sticks from slot 1 & 2 to 3 & 4 on the 8inxp ? I got rid of the northbridge fan and put the zalman sink on it.
I got 15,230 3dmark2001 at 145fsb 290mhzddr gainward ti4600 324/702. I think i could get over 16k. I saw the clip of 3dmark2003 today it looks cool.

I would have to check the manual, but I think bank 1 has to be populated if you are gonna use dual channel.

Hey PJ...what did you decide to do about monitoring your temps on the 8INXP? Did you get MBM to work properly?

mbm (version 5.2.2.0) seems to work fine with my 8inxp. Let me know what the problem is and I'll try to help. To start, go into General/Advanced and check the do not reset sensor box and apply. That'll get rid of the beeping. Under voltages select Standard 4. Under temperatures set sensor 1 to 8712F-1 and set sensor 2 to 8712F-3 diode.

Hey thanks! I have not used MbM very much, but wanted to start using it with my Gigabyte PE board. AL I got were those beeps and could not figure out how to get rid of them. I will try it tonight. This board is awesome!!! Definately worth the money!
