Planning Budget Build For Friend

Hey guys, my buddy has his birthday comming up, and he wants a new 'pooter, so, he asked me to make a potential list of parts, seeing as he is VERY likely to get a new one. Every single penny here is crucial, so please don't make extravigant suggestions. That being said.

CPU- Sempron 3100+, $124
MOBO- Chaintech nForce 3, $87
RAM- Mushkin Basic, PC3200, 512MB, $77
HD- Seagate 40GB, 7200RPM, 8.5ms seek, $56
Video- (Re-using ATI Radeon 9200 for the meantime)
Case- Antec AMB3700, $65-73 (depending on shipping)

So i've got the total around $411. Any other ideas? I wanted to go with a socket 754 platform here, so he'll have some future upgrade options.

The SLK2650-BQE is almost the same case, has a 80mm intake rather than a 120mm but has a better psu than the amb

Sounds good except for the mobo. I suggest getting a Asus K8V SE Deluxe for around $90 on newegg. Its a fantastic mobo for the price. (Also consider an extra 512).

another option would be the epox nforce 3 250gb chip mobo at $90, and for $20 he could have a a64 2800. neither of those would make too much of a difference but i would suggest more hard drive space if it was me. if he doesnt need it that thats fine but i would try to get at least an 80gig drive.

Go with the Chaintech - much better chipset - super budget baord - IMHO

Look for a better deal on the hard drive. You should be able to get a drive for .70/GB without much searching (most likely with rebates though).
What about a DVD drive? I might go cheaper on the processor (if there is a cheaper one for that MB).

I hate to be the one guy suggesting you spend more, but just an extra $18 for a A64-2800 gets you a tiny bit more performance now, and potential for a nice chunk of perfomance when 64bit apps finally roll around. (perhaps now, if your friend decides run some Linux)
