Playstation 3 questions

My wife and daughters have decided that they want to play some games that were only released on the PS3. They are specifically interested in several of the "Tales Of" game series that were PS3 exclusive like Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Abyss. Probably Zestiria as well.

I found a PS3 Ultra Slim white with 500GB drive at my local GameStop for $99. It's normally $150 but the manager gave me a discount and I haven't seen anything better online so I picked that up. It came with one wireless controller. The Tales Of games are all single player, so having just one controller for them shouldn't be a problem. However, if they decide to pick up any other games that do support multiple players, I'll need additional controllers. I don't want to pay $50-$60 each for the few official Sony controllers I have been able to find so I'm curious if there are any inexpensive third party knock-offs that don't completely suck?

Also, this is the first Sony console in the home (we've had Wii, WiiU and XBOX), so I'm looking for suggetions of other PS3 specific games that are most likely to interest teenage girls who enjoy exploring/questing type games. Between my wife and the three girls they have put thousands of hours into the various Zelda, Tales Of, Okami, and Lego games that are available for Wii and XBOX. They don't like fighting games except when it's part of a larger game like the Zelda and Tales games. They don't particularly like racing games, but have played Mario Kart and the original Cars game a fair amount so something similar to those might be an option.

If they're into JRPGs the original NieR is really solid. Ni No Kuni might be something that interests them also. Same for Valkyria Chronicles. As for controllers, your cheapest bet for something high quality will probably be a regular PS4 controller, though you'll lose motion control and rumble. Best Buy has them for $40 on Black Friday. Here is an article on setting it up.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir and Persona 5 might also be games that would appeal to girls into JRPGs. The art is just incredible in both of them. These are both on PS4 also.

You wouldn't believe how many great games are on PS3. I bought my PS3 in January strictly to play Demon's Souls and Okami, and have since bought about 30 more great games on the system that I can't play on PC, 360, or PS4. Plus they're mostly super cheap now. Not NieR since it has become a huge cult hit and not the last two games I showed since they came out this year, but otherwise games are so cheap on the PS3 now.

I bought it to play Gran Turismo 6 and then got The Last of Us. Heard it had an excellent story, but the horrible gameplay got irritating and I never made it further than that early level which looks sort of like a forest maze, with sewer grates all over.

Hmm, I loved the gameplay in TLOU. I loved the limited resources so that you'd have to sneak up behind infected and smash them with a brick or a bottle so you could stun them and finish them off. Or how great it felt when you got enough resources to make a couple of shivs to save for hairy areas with clickers around.

Speaking of The Last of Us, that may be a game worth checking out too. Your daughters and wife may get a kick out of the story with this young teen girl who seems like the biggest liability early on but turns out to be a real badass. The game goes for $2.99 at Gamestop and is arguably the greatest story ever told in a game.

Thank you for all of the suggestions! I'll put these on the "to do" list for when they are done playing the Tales games.

It sounds like your teenage girls grew up from the Nintendo world. I was going to suggest Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite, but melee kills are incredibly brutal in those games. Not sure if you want them to be the ones committing such virtual violence yet. Neither are open world/explore games either. They're action/adventure and argue-ably with the best storyline in games the past 10-15 years. Bioshock Infinite is a shining showcase of how gaming can be a new medium for storytelling. It's one of my newest favorite games of all time which only includes Wasteland (1980's version) and Ultima VI. Last of Us is more existential... perhaps more fitting when they are in college.

Tales of Symphonia Chronicles & Dawn of the New World support multiplayer (during battles)

There's absolutely tons of great old PS1 games on the download store. Check out Castlevania Symphony of the Night, and all the Final Fantasies.

Yeah, we have Dawn of the New World on the Wii. Excessive replays of that one is the main reason why they want to play the others on the PS3. They tried the multiplayer option on the Wii for that one and it was mostly annoying because the other player(s) have to sit there and do nothing when the main player is not actually in a battle. If Chronicles is the same, it may not be the one that "forces" us to buy more controllers. I'll keep it in mind, though.

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is a must! I spent way too many hours enjoying myself wandering around in that game. The soundtrack is absolutely beautiful too. The gameplay is similar to a "Tales of" game.

Yup, will second that!

But Tales of games are the best as well. Love them.

Played Tales of Symphonia, Vesperia (favorite), Graces F, Xillia

Xillia 2 and Zestiria are on my backlog which means that I will never get a chance to play them unfortunately haha.

Yep, I think Ni No Kuni is going up to/near the top of the list just based on the screenshots I've looked at and the reviews of the game. The girls love that anime art style!

Yep, you won't be disappointed. I know one of the Studio Ghibli animators did a lot of the designs for it.

Tales of Symphonia isn't an exclusive. It originally came out for Gamecube and then PS2. That being said, it's fantastic. I beat it several times on Gamecube. Tales of the Abyss was fun, but again originally a PS2 game. I heard Tales of Zestiria was terrible. I played through Tales of Vesperia and think it is not worth playing at all.

Not only are the graphics superb, the music is amazing and if you've seen any Miyazaki films, you'll love the game. It's basically has references from all films and tons of easter eggs.

I will say there is a 100% chance that Ni No Kuni will be available for $5 on the Playstation Store's Black Friday sale starting Tuesday, November 21st. This game has gone on sale for $5 probably 3 or 4 times in 2017, and it will absolutely be $5 again in this sale considering they want to drum up excitement in the sequel that comes out in January (on PS4 and PC). Hell, it might even be $3. Before Middle Earth Shadow of War came out the Playstation Store had the complete edition of Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor for $3.49 I think.

Ni No Kuni is great. It looks like you're controlling an actual cartoon. It's like to Japanese animation what Cuphead is to 1930s American animation. And while The Last of Us is probably the game most often mentioned as the best game on PS3, Ni No Kuni is probably the second most cited title for best game on the PS3.

Those Tales games will probably be cheap in the BF sale too. The Playstation Store discounts them pretty often. Another game that's almost certain to be $5 in the sale is Journey. It's an interesting indie game that a lot of people truly love. For me it was a good game but not a top 10 on the system, but for many it's a top 5 or even top 3 game on the PS3. Graphically it's amazing, I'm so impressed they were able to make this game on PS3.
