Seems they've had the patent out since sept.

Sony is trying to build a AIW Playstation

They keep saying that they are breaking moore's law, but it's only 4 ghz due out in 2005. I think that moore's law applies to processor speed, but they claim it will have 1000 times the computing strength though. I wonder who knows what to do with that. (i have some ideas, but actually utilizing it is another story)

Also, this cell computing is cool, but I forsee problems with distributed computing games. As soon as the hugest, most tasking game is realease everyone plays and it eats up all the extra processing power. (sort of how file-sharing can eat up bandwidth on a network)

What do ya think? To be or not to be?

<sigh> I feel compelled to post this link every time someone gets their nipples all in a twist over the PS3 and how it will be the best video game system ever because of it's hardware.

Let me let you guys in on a little secret. Us old time gamers don't like to talk about it much since we seem to get attacked when we do.

That's not how cell processing works and using your processor at 100% all the time does not decrease its life for all intents and purposes.

2005, not sure what month but that is the word at a local gaming shop here that brings in many Japanese tittles and units (silver, aqua units etc.). In fact they already have the GBASP (Game Boy Advance SP), though I believe it's the Japan version. I'm sure they'll have the Japan version in their store by early 2005.

If you guys bother to read the entire article.

Sony is basically saying that their Playstation2 is 1/10 the processing power of a Pentium4 processor. They claim it is 100x faster than a Pentium4, and 1000x faster than a Playstation2. A pretty sad admission.

moore's law applies to bleeding edge transistor densities. nvidia claimed for a long time they were doing moore's law cubed or some other nonsense, when in fact they were not.

Its called KISS, its what MS and Nintendo will be doing, while the PS3 is going to be a major pain in the ass to program for, far worse than the emotion engine ever was. All the power in the world is useless unless you can use it effectively, not like Im saying Sony's claims are legit. They aren't its PR/Marketing BS just like they did with the PS2.

sounds like sony's got thier hands full with that one, they should stick to TV's.

This will be a NIGHTMARE to program for, and no, by comparison the PS2, as hard as it was at first, is not even a tenth as hard as this will be. AFAIK, this is the main thing that has held cell CPU's back for some time... nobody wanted to make one because of the programming problems that would follow.

for 2 reasons, one is being people are sheep and will buy what ever is popular product, or the in thing is; 2 because ps2 is the most games. performance whise, xbox wollops ps2 and is my choice of consoles, even though its a MS product. :-/

PS2 had 1 year head start on XBox and GC.

People will by what they are comfortable with, and or feel will serve their needs best, not because they are sheep. I could easily call you a sheep for buying an Xbox.

No one is disputing the power of any console; my response was mostly in reference to the graphics remark. But since you brought it up I will repeat: ?Remember that the PS2 was out way before the Xbox, and GC. If you are then that is a very unfair comparison.? It?s like comparing a Geforce2 to a Geforce4 Ti4400. It?s not a fair comparison; the PS2 was out a full year before the Xbox, and almost a year and a half before GC.

Correct, so comparing it to an Xbox or GC (what else would you compare it too) is pretty silly.

Sales do not equal best, but sales do suggest that people don?t only consider hardware superiority. There are other aspects that will lure a consumer to a particular product like the fact you can play DVD's on your PS2 right out of the box, and how you don't need an adapter for your Xbox to hook up to the net (broadband only); this industry is not just for the hardware junkies.

hmmm, from what I remember it was 2 years....well.....for the xbox at least. Since the US got the PS2 a year after japan did.....that must be what your thinking of. But really, the PS2 was out 2 years before the xbox was (gcn was inbetween).

uhhhh, ok, your right that sales does not equal best but as said earlier.....its all about the games. Since the xbox live launch with GR...I think MS went on vacation. Overall, PS2 probably has better games. I like both though. I just think its time for MS to come out with something good already. Their games this year sucks!

oh, and as far as graphics go for the new systems, I think they'll all be pretty close just like xbox, ps2, and gcn is right now. The only reason I like xbox more is because the 5.1DD, voice communication with xbox live, HD (add your own music) and comes with BB adapter.
