OK, so I am migrating from my current Planar PL190M monitor to a new widescreen monitor, I hope. I need help deciding which is best for me. First, I am very happy with my current monitor, I really like the Planar line and would buy again. But, with all the new monitors out, and coming out, it seems that Planar may be a bit behind. Their 23" is a P-MVA screen made by AU OPTICS and is at least 1 year old, if not older, but I am not sure. It is definitely not HDCP compliant. I can not find anyone who has one of these to give me any input on it. So, here are my requirements in a monitor, any help is appreciated:
1. Want a Widescreen display
2. Want one larger than the current 20.1" screens, but, am very impressed with what I have read about the NEC monitor.
3. Do not care about HDCP, I will never watch a movie on it.
4. Will game on it, and most will be FPS.
5. Have a system capable of running at very high rez, so that is not a concern.
6. Really like the new NEC 2190UXI monitors, but not sure about it as a gaming monitor, can I justify the price premium?

That's it, please help me decide!

If you want a fast widescreen monitor, probably your best bet is the new Philips 230WP7NS. It features a new LG.Philips S-IPS panel, so good colors and viewing angles are guaranteed. It sports 12 ms response time, but based on what I've seen in the specs and press release, it looks like 12 ms on/off, 8 ms g2g. This is pretty much the best 23" monitor you can get.

As for the 2190UXi, I wouldn't get it. It's expensive, not a widescreen display, and not stunningly fast. Its smaller brother, the 2090UXi is a bit faster but even this model doesn't seem too great for gaming, compared to the 20" NEC widescreen, 20W(M)GX2. You can see the comparison here:

http://www.lesnumeriques.com/duels.php?...=103&p1=1026&ma2=52&mo2=95&p2=969&ph=1

OTOH, the 2080UXi was praised even by gamers who often claimed it didn't ghost, and even the motion blur wasn't distracting or very pronounced. IPS displays are in general considered OK gaming monitors.

Still, since the 8/16 ms model is so much slower than 6/12 ms, 10/20 ms will be just mediocre for gaming, I guess. Especially for FPS.

Thanks darXoul, I left one other thing, I need one with USB interface as well.

That Phillips looks sweet! Don't see much buzz about it on this site or on WSGF. Any user comments?

I'm guessing this would be a much better panel than the Dell 2407. I may have to re-evaluate my 2007FP (IPS-For Photos) and 2407(PVA-for gaming and movies) duo.

Probably yes. Better viewing angles and colors are a certainty. Probably also less likely to encounter the infamous input lag. As for response time, this is questionable. 6/12 ms IPS surely is faster than 6/16 ms PVA but whether 8/12 ms IPS can accomplish the same feat - who knows...

Gotta say, of all the monitors in excess of 21" this does seem to be at the top of the list. Given the fact that the 2407 is basically a rework of their existing monitor, I do not see it being a better choice than this Phillips. HDCP is obviously a question for some, but other than that, this seems a wise choice IMO

The only problem for me is that it's AT LEAST CDN$200 more than the 2407. I may have to try and locate one so I can see it.

The Philips 23" display has a much smaller pixel size than the Dell 2407, and it will be a pretty big change from your current 19" LCD. Something to keep in mind. Text will be very small...
