hmm, maybe I should hold off on getting an UltraPlex 40? If it's around 300 bones, I think I'll save some money by getting it instead of a replacement for this dying ATAPI CDROM and 4x burner

Actually no.

Plextor's drive is not available as of yet, only the 12x10x32 drive is. TDK, Yamaha, and Sanyo all have their versions of the 16x available (TDK and Sanyo are still somewhat scarce but can be found) but the Plextor has only recently been announced, but not released.

Doesn't TDK use the Plextor drives? Thought that was the case for the 12/10/32 anyways.

Another bright side is hopefully a price reduction for the 12/10/32A for all the slow-pokes to catch up on now.

hmm i still only have a 6x. a 16x would be a nice jump, and scsi anything (except a scsi 1x) would be good too.

don't feel bad man, i just ordered a 12/10/32a myself, i have a knack for jinxing things like this. For example, as soon as i ordered my ddr memory, it was announced that someone doubled the transfer rate of ddr memory..lol

This is getting out of hand...I'm concerned that these super fast write speeds mean less reliable burns and more finicky-ness with the type of CDRs you use, etc.

Plextor 8x SCSI is plenty fast for me now. When the 12X drives come down in price a lot I'll pick up one of those.

Uh, divinemartyr, that's what i said...

TDK...read again...

also, yamaha's isn't exactly comparable since it lacks burn-proof...that's why i specifically mentioned TDK's being out already for AWHILE.

letters are hard to bunch together and coherently make sense of...

2mb buffer STILL? haven't they learned? That is the bare minimum to write at 16x. You get a 1 second hd surge, and your burn time goes up quite a bit because it is forced to use burn-proof. I mean even my old 4x cd-rw had a 2mb buffer.

i think that's the entire point of using a small buffer...because burn-proof is there..

it reduces costs by lowering buffer memory, etc when it's not really needed..

and burn-time going WAY up?...don't think so.

which is why SCSI is good for higher speed burns, your hard drives are quicker, and if your CPU is busy you can still burn, as long as your source hard drives aren't in use enough to lower output to lower then what your CDBurner is running, you're fine.

HaVoC, if the quality of these products was decreasing- I'm sure you'd have heard about it.

Honestly, your logic there is skewed. Using it one could argue that a 400MHz Pentium2 is better than a 1GHz Thunderbird because at such high speeds the data could be messed up due to such high speeds. It just doesn't hold up. Technology goes forward- it never holds still.

And I just bought the 12/10/32A....:disgust:

The Plextor 16/10/40A is available here in Hong Kong (just coming into shops now) for the price of HK$2400.

Besides, a lot of burning progs hold a secondary cache on the hard drive, giving you an extra 10 seconds or so.

Without burnproof, I've never seen my buffer drop below 90%. Hard drives are fast enough if you are smart about what you do while you are burning.

seriously, i was once a burn-proof advocate, but then i realized, i'm cheap.

these burn-proof drives are a rip off (except lite on's 8x/4x...)

honestly, the 12x/8x LG w/ an 8MB buffer for $220CDN is the best i've seen yet.

I tried to run out the 2mb buffer on my 12x drive and I simply couldn't do it. I loaded up quake, unreal, a billion copies of IE, winamp playing an mp3, real player playing a stream.. and I had no luck dropping that bitch below 86% Anything more than 2mb is overkill. Either that or you shouldn't own a 12x burner with your POS computer.
