I keep hearing everyone say the Plextor CDRW is withou a doubt "the best."

I have a coice on my new PC to get either a 24x10x40 Plextor CD-RW, or a Sony 24x10x40. The difference? About 50 bucks...

plextor is king in my book. one of the best for making backup copies of your cdroms, and as far as customer support/reliability of company plextor is top notch also.

Sony is crap. LiteOn can do SD2 backups, Plextor can't beyond the 12x with the old firmware. Plextor is good, but you also pay for it. I'd rather get a LiteOn, and get more capability and save money for future upgrades.

Madthumbs, actually the plextors can do SD2 with the newest version of CloneCD.

Xynder, which burner to choose really depends on what you will primarily use it for. If burning games and programs is your priority then go for the lite-on. If you are interested in ripping and burning audio CDs, a Teac or a Plextor would probably be a better choice (b/c the lite-on doesn't like scratched discs, the reliability of the other two is better).

So, it really depends on your needs. However I would probably avoid a sony as they aren't great drives.

I thought Yamaha's are better for this as they have some fancy scheme for burning music. But for everday burning and game copying, Lite-On s best.

well, LiteOn is getting better (I read somewhere) .... any products after LTR-16102B are good for games backup/audio and better reading on scratched discs.
On a magazine.. they compared LiteOn and Plaxtor.... after 30 continuous burning LiteOn had failed 8 times and Plextor failed 4 times
so.. if youre using it for everyday burning.. get liteon... and keep yur bucks for something else

Zzzz, yea the yamaha burner has this feature called AudioMaster which reduces jitter, but the 40x Plextor has a similiar feature called VariRec, and Teac has Fine Focus something or other. These three companies have always been considered the top when quality and features are taken into consideration.

But as I said, for the average user, a Lite-On is an excellent option.

I have owned Plextor CD Rom's / CDR /CDRW since they had the 4X 8meg Buffer? SCSI CD Rom. I have only had one bad CDRW and they sent me a new/Refurbed one in a week.

The best in my opinion.
