I cann't decide between Plextor 716A and Pioneer 108. I have a Plextor cd burner now it never burned any coasters for me since I had it. Is it really worth paying that much for Plextor I guess because of the name.

Both the burners have the same speed only difference is the buffer 8 in Plextor vs 2 in Pioneer and price is same too $150. Or should I buy OEM Pioneer ??

I'm not up on the latest and greatest DVD burner at the moment but I think many drive manf's have caught up to Plextor in terms of quality and compatibility. I'd look at reviews of the drives and see which one has the best pro/con rating.

Buy the OEM Pioneer, It's very popular for a reason. I did my homework before purchasing mine and the reviews are great.

I don't think they are worth it anymore.
Pioneer, NEC, and LG are great drives, and will probably last just as long and burn just as well as a Plexwriter.
my PX708A has had no problems, but I can only expect that really...

As others have noted, the other companies have caught up to plextor - maybe even surpass. I have the Pioneer Retail A08XL and havent been happier. Coming from a 24x TDK CD burner, this thing is fast - 4 minutes for 720 MB Data CD, and 7 minutes for 4GB DVD @ 12x.

If you dont care about the front bezel of the drive, get OEM version for like 80$ at newegg.

I'd suggest grabing the OEM Pioneer, I had a plextor 24X Cd burner for the longest time too, but I finaly replaced it and haven't really regreted it, Plextor doesn't seem to be worth the premium they charge w/ the technology changing so fast and the Pioneer and NEC drives being so good.

It a matter of preference but there are a few differences past the 8MB vs 2MB Buffer which would make me want the Plextor @ the same cost.. The Retail Pioneer is more stylish to some and reads DVDRAM as well whereas the Plextor has better support and comes with better software IMO. I still use my Plextor CDRW because it does a few things that the average CDRW doesn't and that is Mt Raineer and it also will copy discs that are protected by SafeDisc(2), which most others do not.

True but Plextor is known for good stuff and also Plextor can burn a cd upto 1GB. I think for the same price I want to go for Plextor instead of Pioneer .

As for reading DVDRAM , I dont have any use for it. As long the burner doesn't burn any coasters I am happy with it.

Go for the DVR-108 .. Its got Quiet Drive technolgoy, and if you purchase the ritek 8x dvd-rs, you can burn them at 12x with no problems. Recently bought mines, and I'm buying 2 more.. hehe

Only $74 bucks at newegg... Heres the Link

I just got a black PX-712A. The reviews were good and I've had good experiences with Plextors in the past.

I've got a Plextor PX 504A, antique I guess. Its never given me a lick of trouble, burns CDs and DVDs without a hitch, albeit slowly.

I am thinking about getting a 716A Plextor to augment my system though I will take a look at the Pioneer drives, see what they offer.

DVR-108 doesn't have the quiet technology only the retail version of the drive has that which is same price as Plextor as for buying 712A its a good drive but I want something which I dont have to upgrade next year.

$150 is a rip-off.

I saw NEC and Sony both have 16x Dual Layer DVD+-R/+-RW drives at newegg for under $75. Both are excellent drives. Also, I'd make sure you get a Dual Layer burner - prices on Dual layer discs are plummeting, and they will allow for uncompressed movie burning. Plus, there isn't a price premium any more for the drives, so it's important to make sure you're getting a dual layer drive.

Blain its 716A. Also I haven't decided to return the Plextor drive as for what I will use it for (making backups, movies) any of these will be fine. I will use my separate drive to rip dvd's and use dvd burner.

Out of NEC or Pionner which burner is :-
a) Not too picky about media
b)Will give me good quality burn regardless of + or - dvd disks
c)Can be also used also as a cd burner
d)Is quicker for ripping dvd's or all the burners are same regardless of make. Where I can get retail Pioneer for under $150 . Do OEM drive have too many problems or not . I will burn couple of dvd and will post the results from Plextor in a few days.

For CDs, Plextor is still #1 (note that you pay for software with a plextor as well). If you're not primarily working with CDs, but DVDs, Pioneer and NEC are awfully good options.

Where can I find reviews for this newly Plextor 716A? It is strange to find this product on shelves while there is no online reviews for it. For me, it smells fishy!

The reviews was posted on cdfreaks for the drive . I will be using the derived for burning dvd's and cd's so . How is Pioneer for burning cd and dvd's. The retail price for Pioneer and Plextor are almost same . I will same little $$ by buying OEM pioneer but I like the retail version better LOL.

Does anyone has the new Pioneer and want to share their thoughts.
