My solution:

1) Reverse the creation of Israel...the starting point for all our current problems.
2) Get the hell out of Iraq.
3) Eliminate our military presence in the Middle East.
4) Concentrate our military force in Afghanistan to finish the task we started back in 2001; get rid of al Qaeda and the Taliban. Seems like all the terrorists as of late are from Afghanistan or northern Pakistan.

Seems like their problem with us is quite simple: our country's imperialistic practices are not wanted in the Middle East. Like India's agression against the British or Vietnamese agression against the French, they don't want occupiers in their country, nor do they want a military presence threatening the region.

I'm sure they'll still sell us oil, at a more reasonable price of course. But our greed for the black gold is the root cause of all this, unless you think there is any other reason we are in the Middle East.

Are you going to deny that suicide bombings are and have been a near daily occurrence in Iraq for the past three years? Or are you going to harp on semantics in that it is not figuratively a "daily" occurrence? What's the ratio of Islamic suicide bombings to Christian abortion clinic bombings over the past ten years?

Wouldn't surprise me in the least. 3. Move in with NATO/Lebanese troops and clean out Hezbollah by searching each and every home--not bombing civilians from the sky like Israel does.
4. Get serious about a Palestinian state and create one but make sure there's enough buffer room so that they can't sneak into Israel and blow themselves up (you never know about Pals).
5. Secure our borders once and for all and don't penalize border agents for doing their jobs.

But what type of governments would be voted in in those two countries? Democracy only means the citizens get a chance to vote for their leadership, it doesn't mean they'll choose moderate ones... in fact I think the chances are better that they WONT choose moderates

- Rich Islamic fundamentalist oil nations now even more free to develop nuclear weapons

- Israel isn't going to go anywhere voluntarily, even if the US wants it


Lets say we leave and the governments of Saudia Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan, Bahrain, Qatar, etc fall and a new Islamic nation with a caliph at the head arises... Well, they have nukes now probably, with all that wealth... and it takes a caliph to order an offensive Jihad against the world. (According to Scheuer this Jihad is defensive due to foreign forces on Muslim land.)

I suspect a heavily armored aggressive expansionist muslim super-nation would be a pretty undesirable circumstance.

Not to mention the nuclear exchange that would take place in the region if Israel were seriously threatened


It's a real hell of a mess. I can see why the Bush admin wanted to push the arab world towards moderation with the hope of a moderate government in Iraq promoting similar reform in the region... but they seem to have failed, both becuase of abysmal planning and obvious compatibility problems with western separation of church and state, sectarian hatreds, etc

If the people are unhappy with their governments, then we should encourage them to fall right? Isn't that democracy? The people rising above their false representatives? Let's stop speculating what kind of government will rise in their place, because every government we've overthrown (Iraq, Afghanistan) has been an utter failure to rebuild. It is their country and their land, why are we letting our own country go to sh1t while spending billions a week over there? Think about how much faster New Orleans would have been rebuilt if we spent a weeks worth of war expenditure on our own city...our own culture and history. You accuse them of a predisposition to wage a suicidal war against the entire world, yet the US is the only country to have used nuclear weapons against another country.
