If anyone cares, Cantonese the oral language is closer to Vietnamese than Chinese. The written language is the same though. This happened because a couple thousand years ago the Chinese from the North came to the region known today is GuangZhou (Canton) and conquered it along with Vietnam. Since only Vietnam managed to stay independant, the Cantonese people were "Chinese-ified" over the years.

I speak Taiwanese fairly well, ...well enough to hold a conversation. My parents never really spoke mandarin to me when i was a kid. I wish they did, it would be more useful. The only Mandarin i know has to do w/food items

Another thing I don't like to goto Chinatown in LA is their parking space. I would rather stay in San Gabriel valley like Monterey Park, Alhambra, Rosemead for everything, 'cos parking space usually is not a problem.

As I mentioned in another thread, my Cantonese isn't all that great. Yet, I live in Monterey Park, CA with my grandparents....

It's gotten a little better, but it still isn't enough to converse with strangers. As for with my grandparents, it's part English/part Cantonese.

And I cannot read characters-not even my own name.

Don't mean to offend cantonese speaking people, but it is one of the loudest language and sounds like arguing all the time.
Everyone should speak Mandarin and write traditional chinese.

Yea, I remember getting freaked out as a kid because some parents would use the same tone when speaking english. I was confused whether they were pissed off or not.

Try speaking in normal tone in a packed restarant. It comes natural to yell at each other. Definatly no "can you repeat that?" .

I'm a white person who speaks no dialect of Chinese. Oddly, I seem to be in the minority here...

I could imagine that. But there are some much louder dialects. I happen to be very soft-spoken with my cantonese...probably because I can't get a complete sentence out without having mangled the language. I studied mandarin for two years in college, which means I know absolutely no mandarin.

I speak and understand CANTONESE but in CTown in NYC, it seems like mandarin is used more in places.

Are you kidding? NYC's chinatown is almost all cantonese. My mandarin teacher was complaining because of all the cantonese speakers. She wouldn't be able to bargain as well...haha.

Asian but not Oriental.

I hear that some orientals (lack of a better word) take offence to being called "oriental." Apparently, it's used to describe items and not people. I never realized that though, so I never saw the problem with it....

You are not the only one. I love the food and enjoy reading up on the history as well as watching the movies. Makes me want to check out "Eat Drink Man Woman" again.
