I liked Black Hawk Down but the Boot camp part of Full Metal jacket was great.

From the mouths of extremely shook-up Veterans who had been taken back to those vicious days themselves by the realism of the movie, Saving Private Ryan has to be the best bet as far as realism. It is about a war so vital in man's history that other war movies don't come close to it in depth and breadth.

Black Hawk Down is should not be mentioned in the same breath as FMJ, Platoon, or Hamburger Hill. FMJ is the best out of those you listed.

On the list - Platoon. Off the list - Saving Private Ryan. I question your inclusion of Black Hawk Down, even We Were Soldiers was better than that!

Dammit! SPR is a better Drama, FMJ was more of a shocker. I liked them both for different reasons.

My brother who just got back from Iraq did a lot of BHD style fighting in the streets. He hasn't talked too much about it though. I read some articles about his unit over there and they definitely saw and experienced some rough stuff. This article gives some insight into what he went through. All he's told me so far is that they didn't hardly fight any Iraqis, most Syrians, Palestinians, Pakistanis and any other radical Muslim that wanted a shot at a US soldier. Said he blew one guy's leg clean off and the guy got back up on his one good leg, blood spurting everywhere and kept firing his SKS at him til he finished him off. I voted BoB because that movie showcased the camraderie and day-to-day soldier life better than the others listed. BHD is a close second on actual modern day combat though.

No offence, but I find that story ummmmm... not believable?

What story? The one from my brother? While I understand your disbelief, that is what he said happened over there. That IS what happened over there. Many of the other soldiers I've talked to who came back from there said the same. Most of those guys where hopped up on something he said. Just like in BHD, where they got all hopped up on khat, these guys were on something too. I've never known my brother to ever exagerate or lie about anything, especially of that magnitude. I was there in person when he spoke of it and he got real distant and his tone of voice changed. I have no doubt that his recollection was completely factual.

Lemme look for articles that recount similar instances of what was explained above. I recall reading an article where a Lieutenant Colonel or Colonel was increasingly under attack by truck loads of guys like that that would charge at his BFVs (Bradley Fighting Vehciles) and the BFV would level the truck and they severely injured enemy would still get up and fight until they were decimated. Again, I understand your disbelief, but that commonly happens in warfare. It is not uncommon to lose a limb and not even know it.

Have to agree with Rouge here. BoB showcased the basic life of a soldier really well. BHD is an amazing (and reasonably true) story, but BoB was just that much better.

Most entertaining? Most realistic?

I thought Where Eagles Dare was excellent. I actually haven't seen Saving Private Ryan, BHD or FMJ yet..

The Boot part of of FMJ is simply amazing, but after that the whole "in country" part of the film is a little weak.

The first 30 mins of Saving Pvt Ryan is THE BEST D-day depiction.

The D.I. is pretty good at showing teh Marine Corp training during WWII

Black Hawk Down shows what modern urban combat is. While they did takes ome liberties from the book it is still in my opinion a great movie.
