How long does your computer take to boot up after switching on?
Which CPU do you use (make, speed, o/c or not)?
Which mobo do you use (make , chipset)?
Which hard drive do you use? (make, ATA 66/100/133 etc, rpm)?
Which OS do you use?

Mine takes about 40 sec
Athlon 1.33 Ghz, not overclocked
I will KK266R+, VIA KT 133A
IBM 60 GXP, ATA 100, 7200 RPM
Windows XP

Does it really matter?

If you're so worried about boot up times just leave your pc running 24/7.

I am not worried!!!! It was poll to to collect some real data about analysis of Variance. I also design systems. This will give me a good set of information for the best suitable combination of components. Is there any better place than Anandtech for this?

26 seconds from when I first see video card bios to "Windows Sound"
The Windows 98 logo appears for approx 4-5 seconds during loading.

Windows 98SE
P3 600E @ 840
Asus P3V4X Bios optimized for fastest bootup
8.4gig WD @5400rpm ATA66
256meg Mushkin PC133

This is after I formated my hard drive and have virtually nothing on the computer.

I just did it now, and it took 34 seconds when my startup is not optimized for speed.

What he said.

BTW, why reboot? Real men leave their PC running 24/7, crunching for F&H or something

My bootup time (Desktop to pop up and finishes LOADING) is 26 seconds. I didn't disable any IDE searches or floppy seek. Everything default and nothing overclocked.

AMD Athlon T-Bird 1.4GHz
Crucial 256MB PC2100 DDR RAM
Epox 8HKA+ Motherboard
Western Digital 40GB ATA100/7200RPM HD
Seagate 40GB ATA100/7200RPM HD
Gainward GeForce3
Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM

Oh yeah, I have Windows 98 SE

Between 20 and 25 seconds.

Obviously, hard drive performance has the most significant impact here.

I remember there's a site on how to make win98se boot up faster by disabling a load crap of things. Anybody knows where it is??

You can try and disable floppy boot seek from the bios which will cut like 0.5 seconds. On the desktop, try disabling some programs startups or gamma loader.
And the main thing is getting rid of any hard wares you don't need. Unnecessary hardwares take a while to search when booting.

I went and did all that and it cut my boot up time by 2 seconds. From the moment I press the button to desktop to pop up and stops loading (after that win98se intro music) it takes 24 seconds now.

On my laptop it takes 35 second from pressing power button to Windows XP desktop to come up and an hourglass disappear.

My desktop takes a little longer, mainly because of the SCSI and Network Card initialization routine. The total time is still around 1 min 30 seconds.
