K....now see, that....was not a good experience.:|

I moved the bullet, got the warning: U wanna do this fool? Cause if U do, you may render yr system unbootable and U will be very sorry u did this!

I went, Don be paranoidl!!!!

But then, system would not boot and I got BSOD (see below) and hadda power off power on, change the bullet back to where it was in the bios.

U think my mother is doing this cause I got the SSD even tho this WD Black is very fast?:sneaky:

Sigh. Wut is going on here? Should I have not changed the value of that reg key?

How old is your mobo? Are you using Windows xp?

You should not have changed registry value in Windows. You should have had Windows installed via ahci mode in the other drive so I'm not sure why you got this.

If you had Windows running in legacy mode that's why you get this message now.

Are you trying to boot to an empty drive? If you just added this ssd you should still have your old hd that had Windows on it and be able to boot.

Just change the bios back where it was. With Intel controllers, when you set it to RAID, single drives are running AHCI automatically.

Also, if you are running Intel sata drivers, the value you need to change is located:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStorV

Or better yet, load the AHCI drivers BEFORE changing the bios.

This is an Optiplex 980 MT. Not old. i7 870 (Lynnfield), 8 GBS OF DDR3, I am running W 7 64-bit. Haven't run XP for years on any system.

Thanks for this, I will now go back into the registry and change the value of that key back to 3.

When I posted I had done that, nobody said, no, U should not have, undo it.

I don have Windows running in legacy mode, never have.

Not to worry, it's a journey!

Currently have two ssds and two mechanical:

- SSD 1: OS, Apps, all installs except games
- SSD 2: Games
- Mech 1: media storage
- Mech 2: empty atm

Would use just one large SSD if I could but I'd probably always have a mechanical in there for storage just for the sake of cost.

William U have redeemed yrself!!!! OMG, yay!!!!!!!!! That was so smart and so kind and helpful!

Naturally I changed the setting in the bios back immediately, or else I would not be writing from this system.

Yes, of course, I am running intel controllers, board is intel.

K....let me follow up now!

I will be back. I only just went from size 2 to size zero......:'(

Edit: William, pls say what I should change the value of that key to.

I use a 128GB SSD for the boot drive, a 512GB and a 256GB SSD for games, and a 3TB mechanical drive for all other files.

HTPC (primary system) uses 180GB SSD for boot + games & apps and 1.5TB spinner for documents/photos/etc.

Upgraded girlfriend's laptop to 128GB SSD only with Windows 7 (up from Vista). Runs like a new machine, she was so happy it was crazy (she was about to buy a new laptop since this one had gotten so sluggish).

"Start" to 0, but it looks like it's already set to 0.

Like I said above, you don't really need to do anything, when set to RAID, single drives already run AHCI automatically on Intel controllers.

Yay!!!! K, I fiddled too much. That is a fact. Nothing needed fiddling! But now, we are back to where the system was.....and see good driver, below.

Oops, never mind.. link already posted.

I appreciate yr trying to help! now that I returned the system to wut it was before I fiddled with the reg and the bios.....I think I am good to go.

As they say, if it ain broke do not fix it. I just got insecure re the new drive, the controllers, the bios and felt things needed fixing.

Thas wut the BSOD should have said in plain English, "It wasn't broke, leave it alone, put it back! CHILL... MAKE A SMOOTHIE!":sneaky:

MY DRIVERS ARE IN NO WAY DISABLED. BUT, briefly, my worries about the almost here SSD made ME disabled. Part of being human.

PUPPY TIME/ puppy arrival.

I am disappointed in Crucial. Had I gotten this drive on ebay, same sale price, but would have been no tax. They did not send an adapter....tho they said that would be included. So, REALLY good I got the cheap plastic red one on ebay long ago. I hope it works.

In the box with the drive, there is some stupid flimsy black plastic frame/spacer with strips under which there is clearly adhesive. Useless garbage. I thought they would send a metal adapter/cage/caddy to use in 3.5 slot.

Now, I will install the puppy.... go from there, update firmware, clone WD to it.

The adapter is a waste of a 3.5" bay, just stick it near a fan or on the inside of the case cover with velcro or anywhere you want, hidden from view etc.. take advantage of the versatility

The spacer is for laptops that take a 9mm thick drive. The Crucial is 7mm if I recall, so it's not always useless.

Well...my plan is to pull one of my existing HDDs and jut slip the new puppy into that slot! Use the remaining HDD for backup.

But seriously, I expected Crucial to send a proper 3.5 adapter! And, see below, long ago, I got this crummy thing on ebay for $3.....but it works! I mean, puppy fits perfectly and is happy in it!

Seriously, given the above, wut would I have done without this crummy red thingy?

When hopefully, soon I will be good to go....I am going to email Crucial and tell them shame on U.

And come on, wut U think it costs Micron to make this wee thingy? I mean, THE DRIVE!

Serious question.

William, if you get any smarter or nicer.....I might have to hide under the sofa.:sneaky:

Cept Crucial should have sent me a better version of what I, thank God got long ago on ebay.....cheap (but viable!) red thingy, see pic. Drive likes it cause it was made in China and so was the drive.

So they can now speak Mandarin together.

K... let me open the box and start!

Update:

Well.....I am writing from the new puppy.

BUT......i FIRST HAD TO SPEND FOREVER....practically inventing changing both the red adapter and one of my blue caddys.....just to use the drive in its assigned bay!

Drive in the red caddy slipped down to the bottom of my blue caddy, floated around, was not secure, forget even marginally high enuff to hook it up to SATA and power. My dad in heaven tho, is smiling down.....saying that's my girl, chip off the block, I raised her to be inventive and handy and think unconventionally.....jus like her dad/

Using hot knife, I had to cut off the handle part of the red caddy. Then, using same, I had to remove the top tab of the blue caddy. Then, using n ice pik whose point I heated on the gas burne as i did the knife, I burned holes in the outside of the red one at the right height on both sides, so the nubs inside the blue caddy could fit into them, thus holding the drive at the top of the blue caddy.

I am going to make a pic in a bit.

Did anyone's head explode yet?:sneaky:

So, OK, then, I booted into my WD (which is now asleep), saw the SDD was there, initiated it.

Used my migration app to migrate my WD black to new SSD.....took a while. Then made it first boot item in bios. Rebooted into it.

Then, I used Easy BCD to establish dual boot.

And, here I am. Boot time so far is 15 seconds....not sure yet if I am blown away impressed by the speed.....need to try things.

And, I tried to update the firmware....but for some reason it didn't work.

But, I was in a rush, and need to slow down and try again.

Please let me say heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped in this thread. I could not have done this without you guys. Esp after I thought I needed to fiddle and so, messed things up....before I put things back to here they were.

Be back when I make the pics.

K....I did the firmware update, it flashed, but when system rebooted, black screen said the firmware in this udpate is the same as in yr drive...before Windows loaded. So, that explains that.

Little SSD is faster than my WD Black just not sure how much yet. Now 13 seconds boot. But, I din mind 30-32.

I go take the pic now.

K....I made a pic. i do not wanna unplug the drives and pull the SDD to show whole thing.....cause wut I hadda figure out and do.....I should not have had to.

U will see SATA and power now not perfectly lined up with those on my now backup WD Black, they are now at tiny angle. So what? Who cares?

Surgeries and two ice pik punctures so that the nubs inside the blue caddy could fit in and hold the red one.... indicated, outlined in yellow. no measuring, I eyeballed it.

And yes, puppy is fast.

But Crucial shoulda sent an adapter kit. For $130, yes, they should have.

U gotta be open, creative and invent a fix.

You're never going to see the performance that SSD is capable of, if you you just cloned your old drive and left it in Legacy mode. You need AHCI enabled and a fresh Windows install to achieve max performance from your SSD..

It's not in legacy mode. See her screenshot of the registry above.
