So both products are expected on store shelves by mid-November--though my money is on the G80 cards to launch first and have better availability.

Consider the price comparison:

Sony PlayStation3 "premium" = $599 (if you're lucky enough to find one at retail)
Nvidia GeForce 8800GTS = $499-$599 msrp (my estimate)
Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX = $599-$699 msrp (my estimate based on msrp of 1GB 7950GX2)

Given the above pricing estimates, what are you more likely to spend your money on?

Note--this is only for "serious" buyers, i.e. those expecting to buy within the first two months after either product is released. Not sure what the release timeline for R600 is but if it coincides with this timeframe I might add a "wait for R600" option.

Well considering that all the other components that are put together to make a computer.. and the VC is just a small component.. opposed to the PS3 System including all of the internal's of a PC.. the GPU inside the PS3 is probably much cheaper than the G88's. However, unless the technology can be smaller, cheaper for the PS3 than it is on the open market.. By golly I shall bash them.

Kudo's to Mercenary

I shall do the same. I'd like to know the best way to get my hands on the system..

That, or like me, not willing to drop six Benjamins on either piece of hardware.

I sure won't be buying a PS3 to keep it - if I can't fence it for a good chunk of change, it's either going A) back to the store, or B) up on AT FS/T at-cost.

As far as the best way to get a PS3 ... piracy is always the best option, but if you don't want to get your hands dirty, you can always get in line at 7am on launch day.

Haha, my sarcasm meter's broken so I can't tell if you're serious or not!

I'm honestly perplexed by the whole situation, and I think neither option represents a good buy. An Xbox 360 can be had for cheaper, is easier to buy, and has a larger library of games right now. Wii will be even cheaper. The problem with the GeForce 8800 isn't the other hardware required for a gaming platform (by now I'm sure lots of ATers have upgraded to C2D or are considering a C2D upgrade by Christmas) but the fact that there are no DirectXX games, nor will there be any until Vista (I'm guessing we won't see DxX for WinXP until after Vista ships?) Is there even a point to buying a high-priced DxX card now if the OS isn't optimized and the games don't exist?

Where is the "both" option?

The PS3 for the blu-ray and exclusives, it should last 4-5 years and that's a good buy for $600.

The cheaper GT version of the 8800 for $400 will only last 6-12 months but will be mandatory.

piracy = robbery maybe, steal it from a store or from someone who bought it. Bad idea

I'm looking for the neither option as well... I don't game enough to buy either. Even if I did, the price is prohibitive. Seriously, that's a lot of $$$ to play video games. But, i'm sure millions of people won't bat an eye and are all too eager to drop some coin.

Console games are too expensive for me, especially after a $600 investement. Plus, remember all the hardware issues with the launch PS2's? Mine died within three months of getting it, and there were numerous glitches and updates that were fixed a few months after it came out, but only in new consoles.

I'd go for the video card simply because most fixes can be had for free from the internet. And after recently upgrading my system I'd rather just keep pumping money into it instead of branching out a bit.

Oh and also my dominant hand is in a cast so I can't hold a gamepad

But I can still WASD and mouse with my other hand
