lame 320kbps VBR alt standard

averages about 4-7MB per song. Don't really see the point in recording at a lower bitrate to save a MB or two. Plays without flaws on everything from my car stereo, home stereo, and portable player.

Same here, but I use 256Kbps. HDD space is so cheap, why not have high quality MP3s?

AFAIK, VBR alt-preset standard actually yields better sound quality than standard CBR 256Kbps or even 320Kbps, while using less space most of the time.

If VBR alt-preset standard averages between 175k and 220K (give or take), how could it be "better sound quality" than 256K CBR?

I rip in FLAC and 256 MP3. I used to use Ogg but my Creative player doesn't support it so I stick with the 256 mp3.

Hard drive space is pretty silly cheap, so having both FLAC and MP3 on my computer is no big deal.

I notice that in LAME i have an option for quality in relation to Q5, Q2, Q0, Q9, etc. It says that the lower the Q, the higher the quality, should i worry about any issues with MP3 players if i alter it from default? Set at 5, would i really notice any difference since it is already at 320bit if i set it to Q2 or Q0?

192 mostly, 320 if I directly rip from CD

VBR is good, but i never use it since you can run into problems when you try to edit videos with them using VirtualDub

128kb/s, sounds the same to me as playing it off the CD. Do certain sound cards or speakers have a limit?

The best thing to do IMHO is to rip the CD tracks as a lossless format to your PC for storage. If you want to put the songs on a portable as well then just encode from the lossless for 192 VBR, which is a great combination of size/quality for a component that you likely wouldn't be able to hear the quality loss on anyway.
