I did not use a case for my iPhone 3G and 4. I put protectors on the face and back and was good.

I put a case on my 5 because of the higher likelihood of scratches on the new edges.

I would prefer to go semi-nude, but I know the edge scratches would make me crazy.

TPU case, naked screen. The lip on the case (should) prevent stuff getting trapped and rubbing against the glass.

I've never scratched a phone.

I will prob. decide on a device-by-device basis. Gorilla Glass 2/3 are just too smooth to cover up with protectors, but I won't close the door for screen protectors that might bring some other benefits.

How does the anti-glare protectors work/look? Is there a review or a YouTube video that I can look? I don't think I've seen one yet.

The anti-glare protectors have a little bit of tint to them as opposed to the clear ones. They also have a little bit of a grainy pattern to them. They certainly cut down on the glare, but in my experience they give the display just a little bit of a "screen door" effect.

I put one on my Note 2 because I had read it scratches easily. Since I see a couple fellow N2 users are going without I might give it a shot as well and see how it goes.

Can you link to me a product or two? I would like to have an idea what they're like. (looks, feels, prices, etc,.) I'd appreciate it.

If the screen protectors made out of glass are really effective at protecting the screen even once from a bad drop, I'd definitely consider getting one. Anyone know of a good one for the One? (one one one)

cheap screen protector works for me when I dropped my phone 3 times in one month last summer, no scratch, broken screen, or cracked screen. I guess cheap one works fine.

These are the ones I use. Amazon has a bunch of AG protectors as well, but I have not used anything but the Moshi ones in the past few years. They are expensive but they last forever from what I can tell. Also, I have see some AG protectors at Best Buy and Walmart if you want to actually see one in person.

(just look for the "Anti-Glare" ones and you will see some pictures.)

Cars are in an entirely different order of magnitude of expense, chance of being in an accident in a car is very real due to factors out of one's control, and car insurance is mandatory by law.

Screen protectors on a phone are mostly just a scam. Modern phones don't need them if they are used reasonably; they can go their entire life without scratches on the screen even if that entire time they are often in a pocket.

I drop mine a couple times a month. Reaching for it on the night stand in the middle of the night or waking-up, drop.

I've gotten scratches on all of my phones. I don't baby them, so I'd rather get a screen protector and get no scratches without ever having to worry about it.

Hard to get an idea from their product pictures.. Quite expensive. (and no Nexus 4!) Thank you, though.

Can you damage a smartphone if you applied a screen protector incorrectly?

I heard that there were issues that some Samsung phone had damaged sensors as a result of applying a screen protector the wrong way. I assumed, the screen protector covered up the sensors.

Some protectors require water/soap/hairdryer to be installed. Obviously anything is possible. ^^

None. Over time they develop marks, they discolor, and they peel. But my biggest problem is they are never as smooth as glass.

This. I treat my phone like crap and nearly two years in there is not a single scratch on the screen so I can't imagine ever needing to put a screen protector on a phone.

1. Scratches;
2. Fingerprints.

BTW, great first post.

MotionMan

1. Only happens if you have a screen that isn't Gorilla Glass.
2. Can be wiped off with your shirt.

Do you buy screen protectors for your sunglasses? If not, I'd be liable to call you a hypocrit here.

Sunglasses don't cost as much as smartphones so of course people are going to be more lenient towards them.

GG is very fingerprint-resistant, more than any screen protector I've seen.

Speak for yourself. My Oakleys were plenty expensive, and I got them at the discount rate through the military. And I happen to know that plenty of people have Oakleys, or name-brand eye-glass apparel.

No case, no screen protector.

I used to use screen protectors when the screens were crappy glass or (even worse) plastic but not any more.

I'd rather enjoy the device myself rather than keep it pristine for the next person. Naked screens feel so much better than even expensive screen protectors.

They kind of remind me of those wierd people who have plastic covers on their sofa or car seats.

I had nothing on my OG Droid. Babied it. Somehow it still magically got a nice little scratch I could see at certain angles on it.

Put the wet "orange-peel" like stuff on my next two phones. Definitely not a look I really like, plus I can't put the bastards on without bubbles or a piece of lint sneaking in.

Cute girl at the Verizon store put the cheapo Verizon screen protector on my current phone. It doesn't work quite right, since the Lumia has a sloped screen near the edges. The two long sides it basically doesn't quite curve down perfectly to match. But looking at all the scratches in the screen protector I'm happy.

I'm hoping Nokia gets a version of the 1020 on Verizon, I would sell my 928 for that. So if it keeps the screen in good shape, I'm good with that. I also use the Incipio Feather case for it -- pretty discreet and doesn't add much bulk.

Well, this is just wrong. GC can absolutely develop scratches.

2. Can be wiped off with your shirt.

Of course it can. However, my preference is to not have to constantly wipe fingerprints off of my screen.

Do you buy screen protectors for your sunglasses? If not, I'd be liable to call you a hypocrit here.

How often do you slide your sunglasses into your pocket?
How often do you rub you fingers all over your sunglasses?
Also, when I am not using my sunglasses, I put them in a case or the built-in holder in the car.

In other words, I think your attempt to compare smartphones with sunglasses failed.
