Thanks. I assume you're talking about the lab with the SETI dish attached to his head (instead of the little Jack Russell off to the right in the first "after" shot). Unfortunately, that pic shows how old the "before" shots are as he's been gone for many years. Great great guy. But a serious menace with that cone of shame.

Yeah, I was talking about the lab with the cone of shame. He's very cute. Sorry he's gone.

Thanks Purbeast! This was one of those projects I've been wanting to do for a long time but was reluctant to bring up because (1) it involved a lot of work in a highly used part of the house, and (2) my wife couldn't care less about home theater, listening to music with good equipment, and such. So I was astonished when she came to me and asked about replacing the short stub wall that separated the great room from the faux foyer with something more substantial. Her sole issue was that specific aspect of the room's design (i.e. creating separate spaces). She raised no concern at all when I suggested that "more substantial" would mean something that could support a 65" LCD TV. You can't really tell from the pictures but the configuration of this room before the project really precluded any sort of decent home theater configurations - the TV had to be too small, one front speaker had to be 8 feet further from the TV than the other, and the seating arrangements sucked. So two completely different concerns happened to overlap and create harmony.

I was even more amazed when she didn't object to the dual folder horn subwoofers. Her only request was that I paint them the same color as the rest of the walls in the room in order to make them stand out a bit less. I would have painted them like Holstein cows as long I got permission to build them, but I actually like the minimalist appearance with their current color.

The Salamander media console was the finishing touch. It's the most contemporary piece of furniture in the house but it works really well.

Best of all, when I'm alone in the house, this system can really rock. Fortunately, we live on a 6 acre lot and my only sound limit is presented by the equipment itself.

Next up is building a much larger folder horn sub for another application. It's actually really easy (this is coming from someone with no woodworking experience and very few real woodworking tools) and they put out astonishing sound.

Velodyne DD-10 Plus, bass is very tight, sounds quicker than the Rythmik F12 I have downstairs.

edit:

Updated playing some Mass Effect 2.

Very nice speakers. I see that you've upgraded the TV stand as well from prior pics of your setup!

Table Tuba?

Depends. If I think I can get away with replacing the T18s I just built, I might go the Table Tuba route (2 of them). But WAF is a huge factor in that great room and I was initially told that the subs couldn't dominate the wall, especially with respect to the media console. The Table Tuba is 10 inches wider and longer, which is a big difference. But I think I could manage it.

So if that won't fly, I think I'll be looking at building a THT. I've got a dedicated home theater room with a Hsu VTF-15H that really rocks. I would be interested to see how a THT compares. I couldn't use them together in the same system unfortunately. But the comparison would be interesting. And if the THT wins the comparison, I'm sure I could get a bunch of money for the Hsu on the used market.

Both scenarios are completely gratuitous. The T18s work really really well, as does the VTF-15H. But building these things is just too damned easy and the results are just so amazing if you take your time to do it right (i.e. make sure everything is air tight).

Still trying to save up the funds to start building my Dennis Erskine designed theater... Dunno if it will ever happen as it is 300k$ and I have other pressing needs at the moment (guns, bmw 335, my shiba inu puppy, patio/landscaping)

In any case, I just picked up a tv that finally fits my family room... the 80" vizio m series tv. Speakers are the same, B&W 804s and ACI Maestro powered by Rotel electronics, Verizon FIOS DVR, PS3.

Watched From Up on Poppy Hill; bluray (miyazaki) and it was very sharp. Gonna pop in some other more modern blurays later.

My family room is medium sized at 20'x20'x9' and brightly lit.

Brightly lit indeed.

Looks simple. I like.

The TV is very nice so far. The remote that came with it is trash. It remembered my FiOS box for 5 minutes and now doesn't seem to want to control it anymore. The pairing process keeps failing (remote doesn't turn off the FiOS box as instructed when the itty bity power button on the remote is depressed). Oh wells.

Hoping to convince my wife to buy this:
http://www.raymourflanigan.com/sierra-6-pc-wall-unit-with-60-inch-tv-console-396238000.aspx

I'll have to get some luan and paint it black to put behind the TV but that's simple.

Then toss in a new 60" TV.

Other than that, I have a lot of Pioneer and Infinity gear. Old Infinity gear. These are my towers:

Plan on having them for a long time. Might add in an additional subwoofer at some point. the towers will still get the full audio spectrum. Just want some extra bass for my large room.

why do you want such a big cabinet? you'll never be able to sell it

I think consignment stores would buy it off of him, but he'd have to hire somebody to move it plus a Uhaul truck, and at best he'd get $400 used for something like that.
