Ahhhh. Someone who plays the game

Yep, I pretty much only play RA3 now though.

Here's a screenshot of the settings I am using.

Also quake3 runs optimal @ 125FPS.

I agree. There are just certain jumps that can't be done unless you have 125 fps.

This does a nice job of explaining Quake3 fps.

I am not sure how 1.29 treats it by default.

I dunno if anyone alive could tell the difference between 90 and 125fps

A mute point. If there is a magic 125fps number (and in Q3 there is) which allows more freedom of movement via the game physics, setting your system for the absolute max fps (200+) and capping via com_maxfps 125 will assure that you are most always at 125.

I laughed the first time I looked at a pro (Makaveli's) Q3 config. It made the game look like and 8 bit atari game. Then I cranked my stuff up for max visability and speed. I have no idea what I get in a timedemo right now, but I'm quite sure I see 125 all the time (unless im messing around in a server with like 20+ players and they are all in the same room).

Of course, this is Q3 specific.

On my Tbird 850 Mhz w/ GF DDR I manage 96 FPS in 1024x768x32 with all the options on max. I don't really care about getting 200+ fps I just want the game to look really nice.

What servers you play at?

I live on the west coast, so I generally play on toocool, mcp, riverside, and bay area when I play on publics.

Weird, I have to have the filename as demo.dm_66 in order for it to show up in the Demos listing. And even then, Quaver wouldn't load. This happen to anyone else? I do have Team Arena installed.

Man, these incredible frame rates seem utterly useless to me. The human eye, even the best of them, cannot detect flicker at over 60 frames/s. This has been tested for the last 20 years. It's the reason NTSC video was pegged at 60 fields/s...which is not a full frame but being interlaced deceives the eye into thinking it is. Granted, nearly all monitors are non-interlaced, and increased resolutions will lower frame rates, but most good monitors can handle 1280X1024 non-interlaced @75Hz. Not to mention non-interlaced monitors have less inherent flicker due to the fact that they refresh before the phosphor can start to fade.

I've read about the 60 fps limit as well, but as others have mentioned, higher fps in Quake 3 allow you to "move better" even if your eyes aren't noticing the difference.

True, true. But I'd say connection lag is far more deadly that dropping a couple frames. Of course I could be jealous...look at these impressive benchmark scores. Ya know, were it not for this thread, I'd never have checked out 3dmark2001 and found out my otherwise great system is not so great.

It is just me, or is www.anandtech.com down right now? I was about to check out your rig... Anyway, I think that 3d benchmark programs are pretty useless. What should matter is how your setup performs in the games you play (and, of course, that you are happy with it). The only 3d application I run on my computer happens to be Quake 3, and if I'm already getting a solid 125 fps, there's no need to upgrade until Quake 4 comes out.

ST4RCUTTER it's like having a hotrod car, you know it will do 200 mph but you know you will never get to drive it that fast... it's just because "my quake 3 does 245 fps"

Heh. Read my post above. This has been hashed over a billion times.

1) If framrates were static, then 60fps would be fine. They are not, so having a huge average ensures that your minimum is high, and rarely tested in gameplay.

2) In Quake 3 there is a well documented difference between 60, 85, and even 125 fps in regards to the physics of the game engine in multiplayer mode. Basically, because of the way movement is interpolated by the server, sending the server 125fps allows you to jump farther.

If personX is happy with 60fps in most single player games, that's cool. In a specific game (Quake3 multiplayer) there is a difference beteween 60fps and 85fps, and a big difference between 60 and 125fps.

This isnt working. With quake, there are too many different settings you can have. Some people who claim they are on max are getting higher scores than my gf2ultra and 1 gig tbird on a radeon w/ a duron. Anyways,

1gig tbird @ 1080 (KT7 doesnt let me go very high)
256 megs of generic RAM
Abit KT7
Elsa GLADIAC Ultra @ 250/460

I get 64 fps in demo127 @ 1280 with everything up except /cg_drawgun 1. (yes everything, not everything minus 16 bit or everything minus lightmap)

NV15 download

And why does it matter if I get 60fps or 200fps in Q3?... Because Q3 isn't the only game out there. You definitely won't see the same kind of performance out of Giants or B&W.

So, thanks to Wingnut, I put in the NV15 demo in /baseq3 and loaded up Q3, typed /map nv15, and it loaded it. Then what? I guess I could walk around and play with it, but it seems pretty drab to me being the only person. Heh.

I still haven't figured out why my demo001 and demo002 disappeared, and why my demos have to be with extension .dm_66 in order to show up in the demo list. Any ideas?
