Dual P3 450's
256MB PC100 RAM
3 10000 rpm SCSI 9.5 gig drives in a RAID5

The only cool thing is that the drives and power supplies are hot swappable.

The specs aren't much, but I have 1600 of them

Apple Power Mac G3 running Mac OS 8.6
350MHz G3 Micro Processor with 192MB memory (upgraded from 64MB)
4GB storage
Applevision 1710AV 17" CRT monitor with Sony Aperture Grill (cost me over $1000 at the time)

Runs as a file and database server running filemaker pro database. It's been running fine for the
last 5 years. Extremely reliable as all Apple products are.

Intel Pentium 166 MHz
48MB EDO SIMMs
2.0GB Fujitsu hard disk
10Mbit NIC
running Apache on NetBSD 1.6.2

Why would I need anything more than the $10 computer I bought last year for webserving? Even when file serving you don't need large amounts of CPU and memory or you are doing something wrong...

I wish Windows users could have that mentality.. unfortunately we can't. Sygate firewall takes 40% of my 350MHz P2 at all times . I won't even tell you what Zone Alarm does.

I have a PIII-500 with 512MB of RAM and a 13.5GB hard drive. More than enough for my needs. Runs Apache/MySQL and BlackMoonFTP Server on Windows 2000 Pro. I used to host my mail but my ISP blocked port 25.

I'm going to switch to Linux soon. I have a P200MMX in the closet that I used to learn Linux, and now I am able to set up Slackware (well Vector, based on Slack) to do exactly what my Windows server is doing.

I know there are a lot of Linux lovers, but is switching to Linux gonna be such an improvement?

Just change the port. 25 is the SMTP port, so you only use that port when you are SENDING mail. Change the port on the server, then change the port your mail client sends to. I know both Outlook and Mozilla let you set both the SMTP port and the POP3 port.

If your ISP blocks the POP3 port, you can change that as well. If you set the POP3 port to be 5000, your email address would be you@yourdomain.com:5000.

Well actually it blocks *outgoing* connections on port 25.

I only have one going right now - running RedHat 7.3ish and SAMBA for hosting files. It's a slick little K6-3+ 450mhz with 256mb RAM. It runs very well, is dead silent, and never goes down. I love the old K6-2/K6-3 procs.
