3dfx announced today that they have signed a definitive agreement with Nvidia Corporation to sell to them most of 3dfx's assets. With this agreement it has also been announced that 3dfx will discontinue techincal support after Feb. 15th. Concidering the nature of this product, we feel that continuing to provide this product to our customers will jeopardize their satisfaction with both BBY and the product long term.

We are asking that you pull all 3dfx skus listed below off of your shelves and hold in the warehouse. The product will then be sent during our January brown goods return. Your complete execution is needed on this.

3916329 - Voodoo 4 4500 PCI
3605370 - V3 3000 AGP
4029116 - Voodoo TV 200 PCI
3916338 - Voodoo 5 5500 PCI
3916310 - Voodoo 4 4500 AGP
3915927 - Voodoo 5 5500 AGP
3605398 - V3 2000 PCI
3764661 - Voodoo 3000 PCI

Thanks for you attention and execution of this plan.

STFU Ferengis.

I was wondering the same thing, dealgod, about potential deals on these cards. However, I have the feeling that Nvidia will actually just have all cards pulled back to them for destruction. They would rather fill the market with Nvidia products than sell the 3dfx inventory at reduced prices (hook consumers into your product line, not a dead one). Unfortunately, I think that's the most likely scenario.

Looks like I better download all the latest drivers for my Voodoo cards and save them in a safe place. Looks like after Feb. 15th you will no longer be able to get drivers for their cards.

This post sounds real:

Everything I've seen indicates that nVidia has purchased the technology not the current Voodoo Cards. Questions to nVidia about support for the Vodoo 5500/4500 cards get met with a coy that's up to 3Dfx we didn't buy the cards.

3DFx has clearly indicated that they intend to close up shop. They will no longer exist to support the cards.

Anyway I find this all really sickening. nVidia gets the tech but not the headache of actually supporting the millions of 3Dfx users. 3Dfx gives the shaft to one of the loyalist users bases in existence.

The only way in my eyes that 3DFx can "come clean" is if they open source ALL drivers for ALL operating systems; allowing the users to support on their own the hardware they have purchased.

Nvidia is doing 3dfx a favor! It makes me sick how an extremely sucessful company such as 3dfx can run themselves into the ground in 4 years. Its the Intel syndrome, "We tell you what YOU want!"

Believe it. Here is the text from the 3dfx web page...
==================

To our valued customers:

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support you've given 3dfx over the years. Through all our ups and downs, we've always been proud of our extremely loyal customers and fans. That's what makes our recent actions so difficult.

Although we've done our best to avoid taking drastic action, we have finally been forced to admit that there is no possible way we can continue in our current state. As such, we have negotiated an agreement with nVidia that will allow us to provide the best possible result to our creditors, investors, employees and customers.

Under this agreement, nVidia will acquire certain, specific assets from 3dfx including technology, company and product brands and other assets. In addition, the 3dfx board of directors has recommended to our shareholders the dissolution of the company over the next few months. Until that time, however, 3dfx products will remain available at various retail and online locations, and we will continue to support our current and future customers. For additional information, please see the press releases that were issued by 3dfx on December 15, 2000.

While we firmly believe this agreement is in the best interest of all involved, we deeply regret these actions. Again, we want to extend our sincerest thanks to every one of you who helped 3dfx revolutionize 3D graphics and 3D gaming on the PC. Rest assured, the 3dfx legacy will live on through the combined strengths of these two great companies.

Sincerely,
Scott Sellers
3dfx Founder and CTO

?????

Does anyone know if nVidia is getting the rights to the Voodoo 2/3000/4500/5500 98/Me/NT/2000 Drivers????

If not, what would be the best way to "encourage" 3Dfx to Open Source the drivers before they die????

If nVidia gets the drivers, do they also get the liability if the drivers don't work with new games? With my Voodoo2 I needed to load new drivers EVERY time I installed a new game.

This is all pretty sad. It'll just be Nvidia and ATI to fight it out. It'd be great to score a cheap Voodoo5...but It'd suck to get stuck w/ a product that won't ever get new drivers or support. One wouldn't get updated drivers for Windows Whistler or future OS's as an example..
