power consumption of psu.

How much watts per hours do power supplies consumes. The reason is that at my house we are very concerned about electricity consumption. For example i have a pcpower and cooling silencer 410 psu in my rig. The question is the wattage rated at a per hours basis or the by watts supplied. If it is by watts supplied, how does this equate into how much wattage it consumes per hour. Thanks.

It's the amount of power actually drawn from the PC's components + the inefficieny of the PSU at the given draw from the PC.

The PSU you have is 74% efficient minimum.

lets say the components in my system is drawing 210 watts from the PSU, does that mean it is consuming 210 watts per hour? thanks

It consumes 210 watts per second. However almost all calculations are done using kwh, or Killo-watt hours, or in english 1kwh is the same as a 1000W item running for an hour (or alternativly a 200W item running for 5hr).

If your parts need 210W (that's a figure for it at full load i'm guessing, in which case it will really use less than that for the most part) then it will draw 280W at the plug socket as aprox 25% of the power is lost in the PSU.

get a seasonic if you care about efficiency/power usage. and its quieter to boot. pc power is solid stuff, but they don't match seasonic in silence+efficiency

Actually they can, and the Silencer is based on a Seasonic circuit design.

Power is a rate, so it is already expressed as a "per unit time" unit. Power = Energy/Time. In an hour your system will consume 210wh(watt-hour), which is a measure of how much energy it consumes. However, your PSU will likely draw more than that from the wall outlet since all PSUs have <100% efficiency. Assuming that at 210W your PSU is 80% efficient, then your PSU will be drawing (10/8)*210 = whatever from the wall outlet.

thanks for clearing things up. Bobthelost mention that it used 210W per second which i found to be very high energy usage. That would mean every minute would consume kW.

Watts is a rate, not a quantity. When you pay for power, you are paying for (kilo)watt-hours, or the number of watts you were consuming for the number of hours you consumed them.

If you're concerned about efficiency, look for a psu with "active PFC" (Power Factor Correction). I won't go into an explanation of it, but they can realistically be >90% efficient.

Actually PFC has nothing to do with efficiency, at least, nothing that would save the end user money. It does save the power company money, but that doesn't concern you. You just need to find one with high EFFICIENCY(not high PFC). Websites such as SPCR and xbitlabs do PSU reviews that mention these figures for a variety of loads, so choose the one that's reasonably high(80% is a good figure to shoot for).

210W per second isn't a unit of power or energy. If you remember calculus, 210W/s is like differentiating power. To draw a simple analogy, power is a rate like speed, and energy is a quantity like distance. Distance over time is speed, much like energy over time is power.

You can find out what all the major stuff in your house uses over time with the P3 Kill A Watt meter. It's a good way to find out where your electricity money is going. I reviewed it at http://www.techimo.com/reviews/ - it's in the Power Supply section. Best price is usually on eBay but check with Froogle too. The Seasonic Power Angel is the same except for the styling but it uaually costs more.
