Hey everyone,
I'm looking for help diagnosing a system that would no longer boot. As you can tell from the specs lower down, it is a couple years old.
Wouldn't you know it, I was dominating faces in TF2 last night, when right around midnight, my game crashed.
My computer began acting sluggish; whenever I tried to reopen the game, it would freeze at the loading screen. When I tried closing steam and reopening both it and TF2, the screen went a blank purple and the music that was playing froze on the beat.
I turned the computer off and back on, but was met with a delayed, long beep from the mobo. Usually, when I start up, my GPU fan goes full blast before POST, then after POST, it's cut down to idle speeds. After the crash, the GPU fan continued to spin at maximum, indefinitely.
My keyboard has backlit keys; around when the beep sounds, the backlights struggle on (flicker a a couple times), then remain on. Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll lock all light up for a moment, but then just Num Lock remains on; pushing the num lock key doesn't turn it off.
The monitor never came out of power saver.
I turned my machine and power supply off, went to bed, and woke up 6 hours later. I turned the Power Supply back on, hit the power switch, and it began to power on CLOSE to normally. The monitor displayed some of the stuff that usually happens after POST, getting as far as 'Windows did not shut down properly' as one would normally expect.
When Windows began to load, the screen bounced around abnormally (the image moved around the middle of the screen), then went black again. Trying to start up again, I was met with the pained, longer beep.
I'm an amateur, but the symptoms (and almost-recovery after six hours of being off) seem to suggest power supply. I'm running a Corsair VX450W power supply, Gigabyte S-series motherboard, an Intel Q6600 @2.4 GHz, 4 gigs of ram (I forget the brand and whatnot), and a Geforce 8800 GT.
Any help getting a solid diagnosis or a even the 'maybes' would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone.
