Power supply woo.

I recently purchased a Antec smart power 2.0 for 40 after rebate from compusa in order to power my new Core 2 Duo build because i stupidlly accidientally cut one of the wire in the 4 pin power to the processor. That was 11 days ago. I purchased because I though Antec is suppose to be a very good pwoer supply maker, at least 1-2 years ago. Anyhow, I recenly read that all those dx 10 card coming out will eat power like crazy and smart power 2.0 is not really good on that department saying that it is not power efficient. Also, I read all these report saying Antec smart power 2.0 is actually pretty bad and it got a high failre rate.

The deal is should I order a better power supply asap as a prepration to dx 10 card and to made sure it can last a while and return the Antec to compusa? I read that compusa has a 21 days return policy for power supply.

If you don't stress out a system too much, that antec might last several years, I got a antec 300w and its been running for 4 years without a hitch.
However, I suppose the new G80 cards will require stronger rails...i heard 40amps??? 600watss maybe? Talk about overkill!

Antec is a 5/10 in my opinion. There are much worse but much better; but I wouldn't ever put an Antec in my own system.

Lets clear things up here...

Your SmartPower II has a high failure rate for one main reason. They have Fuhjyyu caps on the secondary side, and they are prone to heat. Usually, in normal conditions it will take this Fuhjyyu filled PSU about a year or two to die. The Smartpower II, Truepower II, and Neopower, are all made by CWT, and have these Fuhjyyu caps. Recently everyone who rushed out and got one of these PSUs have had their PSU die on them in the last year or so. The failure rate is going up, and people are realizing that these PSUs arn't as good as they originaly expected. Now, the Trio and NeoHE are made by Seasonic, not CWT, and have non-terrible caps. Their is your Antec summary, lets get to actually figuring things out.

I recommend that you return your PSU just becasue their are better PSUs for the money, and CompUSA generally overprices hardware. Now, please tell me more about what you plan to do with for a videocard over your next PSU's lifetime.

Well, I will most likely use it for part gaming and part schoolwork. Right now I got a 7800gt and might upgrade to a dx 10 card when they becoem affordable.

Ok, so I need a better power source, what brand should I choose? Would a 600 watt be powerful enough to power 2 optical drive, 3 hdd and a dx 10 card? I am not really into super heavy gaming, but when I want to play game, I want decent graphic out of it.

I have 2 systems running of the smart power II that comes with the sonata II case. Neither have given me any problems. My overclocked X2 with 7800GT is one, my conroe at 3.1ghz is the other(also used it for my 805 @3.6ghz). While there are definatly better power supplies, I wouldn't worry about it.

That depends on which one you plan on getting.

Lina Inverse?

It's confirmed that a good 450W supply can handle any single DX10 card. They're saying 450W PSU for 8800GTX and 400W for 8800GT (or is it GS?). Which ever card our OP gets, it can be powered by my recommendations.

Seriously, I'm opposed to getting a dx10 card within like... a year of when they come out. The reasons are simple:
1. VERY few games will support it
2. I don't like wasting cash.
3. They will be very expensive.
4. They will use more power than a hummer uses gas.
5. I don't like wasting cash.
But this thread isn't about video cards, is it? Well, the enhance 5150gh is probably the best bang for buck psu out there ATM, and it should fuel any card (or mid range sli) setup nicely. Ewiz has it for $80 shipped. If you like the simplicity of modular cabling, the enermax liberty, corsiar hx520w and seasonic m12 500w are really the only one's you should consider. The seasonic combines power, stability and silence quite nicely from what I hear.

I don't know, sometimes they have the X-Finities going for $5, that's the best bang for the buck PSU And come on, their are good modular PSUs besides Seasonic and Enermax's offerings. Ultra X2? Antec NeoHE? even the OCZ ModStream is decent.

Ultra X2=1.5 tier, can't decide.
Antec NeoHe=good, except a few MoBo issues. Isn't right for everyone...
OCZ modstream=tacky IMO

Ultra X2 = No major problems, can pull its rated load. Might not last you 7-8yrs but a good supply none the less.
Antec NeoHE = I hear the motherboard issues have been fixed with the second revision of the HE.
OCZ Modstream = I agree.

Right i am i am leaning toward the Ultra X-Finity 500W w/ SLi sicne it is only 25 shipped since that one is only 70 after rebate or Enhance ENP 80+ 500W w/ SLi , so it should be a decent psu, at least better than antec? Plan to order tonight since i need to get the power supply befoire i can return the antec to compusa and i got like only 10 days left to return it

Don't fool yourself into thinking a $25 Ultra is anywhere near the same as quality Seasonic, Enhance, or Forton-Source.

I'd take an X-Finity over a FSP any day. Seasonic or Enhance is another story.
