Yeah, I'd spend a good sum, probably about 100k securing a decent place to live, paying off some debts, and tuition, and then get a decent car, and then I'd save quite a bit, and then invest the rest. I would like to think that I would also donate to charities regularly, but unfortunately that seems to be something that is much easier to say than to do for me at least (I'm human, I like to spend money on things for myself and people I know).

so what? have you ever considered that not everyone wants to maximize their income via the market and some are generally happy with a supplemental income that is FDIC insured? I would plan on living off the $40k plus my job (figuring on $50k at least = $90k) so that my wife could do what she wants to do...
