You don't need to worry about Prescott's heat in any case. It's only a little warmer than Northwood.

I believe video editing is one of the places where Prescott is better than Northwood, though. Overall, their performance is similar. If sse3 starts to be implemented, you may be glad to have Prescott, but it's hard to say at this point.

Oh yeah, there is also the very, very, vague possiblilty of Intel allowing you to turn on Prescott's 64bitness.

from 3.5ghz and on, the prescott becomes slightly superior over the northwood, though its still a bit warmer.

It is because of the fact that a little heat can cause the cpu to throttle or lock

if you are going 478 then get the Northwood. In the coming months the LGA775 will be putting out 4Ghz CPU's then that would be were the Prescott will show some good performance.

And what proof do you have that this generation of Prescott's have 64 bit capabilities?

There are none because Intel has not put to there 64 bit processors in a desktop configuration. If they had it would have been a huge selling point months ago.

Intel allowing you to turn something on???? I want what your smoking!

That's a crock, Intel is just starting to roll theer 64bit Xeon's, desktop CPU's are next. They will launch close to the time 64bit Windows does. Not two years prior like AMD, when all it boils down to is market hype.

It is well known that Prescott has way too many transistors for a Northwood with more cache*. This was well reported long ago. Speculation was that Prescott had 64bit capabilities. Since Nocona is Prescott, this now seems like an even better possibility than it did after the extra transistors were noticed.

Here is one of many articles reporting on Prescott's 64bit capabilities around the time the story came out.

64bits in Prescott?

It seems clear to me that Prescott does have 64bit built in. Thus my remark about it and my emoticon about Intel turning it on.

*EDIT: Even accounting for the pipeline.

Another early article about it. They were basically wrong about it not being compatible with AMD's, though.
