are you holding your cursor on the zombie? I've noticed it sometimes too, but if you have your cursor on them it seems to happen less often

Actually, if you shoot them in the legs, they'll go down and you can shoot them when they're down making a total of two shots instead of three+. Those extra bullets count when the whole cementary is coming at you.
