Current challenge: Prime Sierpinski Problem (PSP) LLR, December 12-21 (04:19 UTC)

Happy new year! Here's the (tentative) list of this year's PrimeGrid challenges:

Code:
# Date Time UTC Project Duration Challenge
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 7-22 January 05:43:00 SoB-LLR 15 days Conjunction of Venus & Jupiter Challenge
2 5-10 March 18:00:00 GCW-LLR 5 days Year of the Pig(ging out on our CPU cycles :P) Challenge
3 24-31 May 00:00:00 TRP-LLR 7 days Hans Ivar Riesel's 90th Birthday Challenge
4 15-20 July 20:17:00 PPS-LLR 5 days 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing Challenge
5 3-10 August 00:00:00 ESP-LLR 7 days Lennart Vogel Honorary Challenge
6 21-26 September 11:00:00 AP27 5 days Oktoberfest Challenge
7 10-15 October 18:00:00 PPS-DIV 5 days World Maths Day Challenge
8 24-29 October 00:00:00 321-LLR 5 days 50 years First ARPANET Connection Challenge
9 1-11 November 18:04:00 PSP-LLR 10 days Transit of Mercury Across the Sun Challenge
10 12-22 December 04:19:00 GFN-21+ 10 days Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi! Summer Solstice Challenge

What you need:
  • One or more fast x86 processors, preferably with lots of cores. (Even slow ones might do!)
  • Windows (Vista or later 64-bit, or XP or later 32-bit), Linux, or MacOS 10.4+.
  • BOINC, attached to PrimeGrid (http://www.primegrid.com/).
  • Your PrimeGrid Preferences with only the above project(s) selected in the Projects section.
  • Patience! All of these projects run long, slow WUs, at least on your CPU. As a result, no challenge is less than five days long.

What may help LLR (all but two of the challenges):
  • An Intel Sandy Bridge or later ("Core series" other than first-generation) processor with AVX may be 20-70% faster than with the default application. Sadly, that does not include Pentium or Celeron processors, or AMD processors.
  • In most challenges - probably all of these since their WUs are so large - it helps to enable multi-core processing with app_config.xml. Leave hyper-threading on if you do this!
  • Faster RAM might help on many challenges, as long as it's stable.
What may help in other challenges:
  • A GPU helps in two challenges.
  • Juggling in some extra WUs may help in challenges where you run more than one WU on the CPU at a time. (Or, switching to use all cores on one WU at the end may work equally well.)
  • Turning on hyper-threading may help.

What won't help (but won't hurt either):
  • A large amount of RAM.
  • Any Android devices.

What won't help (and will hurt, sort of):
  • Unstable processors. (Invalid work will be deducted! If Prime95 worked recently on your processor, it should be stable.)
  • Work not downloaded anduploaded within the challenge. (It's not counted.) Should you not be able to be in front of one or more computers at that time, there are several options:
    • You can often set BOINC's network connection preferences to wait until a minute or two after challenge time.
    • And for short work units, you can just set the queue level very low (0.01 days). This also makes it more likely that you will be a prime finder rather than a double-checker. But you might want to raise their queue size after the challenge is underway.

Welcome and good luck to all!

P.S. If no one has posted stats lately, try tracking your stats with my user script. With that installed, visit the current challenge's Team stats link for TeAm stats.

I'm not slow; the rest of you are just really, really fast! Plus my CPU work hasn't come in yet.

I guess the question is, how [H]ard can we run?

Just for you guys, I'm going to replace the PSU in this dual 8GB RX 570 rig, with one of my spare 750W 80Plus Gold Antec EDG PSUs, just to see if I can keep it running for more than 30 minutes before shutting off, and that will additionally tell me if the issue is the PSU, or my GPUs, shutting the rig down. If it continues to shut down, then one of my GPUs is running way too hot or unfortunately, somehow defective.

Edit: Scratch that, I'm saving the EDG units for my personal rigs, I'm going to try swapping in a 650W Antec VP 650 ("Value Power"). It just says "80Plus", but it's 650W, supposedly, so hopefully that would be enough, plus, unlike the EDG, it's still under warranty.

Edit: Ok, now we'll see if it shuts down on me again. I reset the WattMan setting, so I'm running without the Power Limit -10% on both cards. Living dangerously!

Edit: Well, it's been over 30 minutes, probably over an hour, and it hasn't shut down, even without the negative power limit settings in WattMan. I'm going to tentatively call it good, although this case does use a bottom intake for the PSU fan (face down), and it's on carpet, but not shag, so there is some clearance with the case feet. Max temp on the hottest GPU has hit 94C though, and CPU and VRM temps are at 85C.

Edit: I spoke too soon. Came back home from the store, and ... it's powered-down. WTF is causing that? PSU overheating (not enough intake airflow, from the bottom)? VRM or CPU overheating (they were both at 85C)? GPU overheating and causing a shutdown? GPU max temp was at 94C, was running 90-91C, maybe if it spiked to 95C, it caused a shutdown?

Edit: Decided to test if the 'Gaming X' card was the problematic card that was overheating. So I removed the primary GPU, left the 'Armor Mk.2' in the secondary GPU slot, and fired that rig back up. Also reduced the CPU cores to 50%, so that it wouldn't work the CPU so hard with the HT, and possibly allow more throughput with the CPU tasks.

Also, leaving the case side off this time, I don't think that the case fans move all that much heat, and while this case does have two fan mounts on top, I don't have fans in them. (I do have some 140mm fans I could put in, if I can find the "offset" screws for mounting fans that go through these rubber grommets on this case, they're not quite normal fan mounts, and normal fan screws will just "fall through" the holes. Maybe some washers would help.)

Better to soldier on with one GPU, than not solder on at all, we need to beat [H]!

Yeah i wasn't running cpu tasks for the first day and a half because i was chasing some WCG goals, but i did the math and it meant the difference between keeping or losing a few spots so i started cpu tasks yesterday evening. i was also running most of my 1080ti's at 150w which is what i usually run them at but said f that too and bumped it to 175w

Looks like the 4th is with us strongly.

And did anybody mention that someone found an AP27 in this challenge?! Not on our TeAm, unfortunately.

I wish SG's charts could be zoomed in. Dark Blue (TeAm) vs Light Green (SG), the race for 3rd is on, with only 10+ hours remaining!

(this is points per hour)

Same graph but I tried to 'hide' the other colors. It is the last one-third (1/3rd) of the graph (24 hours ago till now) that give me hope.

I removed the "problematic" MSI 8GB RX 570, and moved the remaining MSI 8GB RX 570 'Armor Mk.2' into a Ryzen rig, which was overclocked, but with a PrimeGrid load, locked up within a few minutes of running, Ryzen R5 1600 @ 101C (LOL not good). So I removed the OC, and it was running pretty well, but with only one stick of 16GB of RAM (single-channel), so I shut it down briefly to pop in another 16GB stick, running @ 2667, so better memory bandwidth for the CPU WUs. Hopefully that batch will get in on time, I don't think that my Ryzen R5 3600's next batch of CPU WU's will make it, they take 19-20h, and just queued up moments ago.

You should be able to download an SVG version. You can zoom in on that and potentially edit the source to remove the other colors.

But CPU work on this project is hard to predict.

so for those tasks that are not quite going to make it... i was thinking maybe if you disable HT it would go faster. obviously this would mean only half as many but if you were right on the edge of not making the deadline... my 3900x has a batch that is due in 9-10 hours which is kinda lame

I am gonna try it anyways and see if i can get at least 11-12 tasks through that otherwise wouldn't make the deadline. the other possibility is setting config to run 2.0 cpu resources in an app config. have not tried that so don't know if it would work but i imagine it would

I had similar thinking for my R5 3600 CPU tasks. Instead of running 12, I set CPU usage to 50% cores, so it would only run 6 tasks at once, and hopefully spread them out over real cores (go go Windows' scheduler). Anyways, based on their completion-time estimates, I don't think that really mattered much. Oh well.
