Hello folks,

I've been working on a tool to check PM's without having a browser open, alot of people have asked for it. The tool will run in your taskbar and let you know when you have new PM's, and allow you to reply right from the tool. It also keeps a history of the PM's it syncs. The point of this tool is not to become or replicate an IM, but to augment the forums and allow for an easy way to keep in touch without hitting F5 all day in the forums.

Requirements:

- Windows 98+
- .NET Framework 1.1 (available on windowsupdate.microsoft.com)

Link: http://images.anandtech.com/jason/ftpm.zip

Instructions:

Once installed you need to enter some information:

Forum URL : http://forums.anandtech.com
Forum ID: 1

Username/password is your forum login.

Jason, what does the main window do. Mine is still blank after receiving PM's. Although it does notify it.

Puterwiz, it is a list of your forum buddies, allowing you to click to message or view history.

why not just have it email us when we get a pm like with subscribed threads? i mean this is neat and all, but i don't really want to run another program on every computer i use just to see if i have new pm's. just curious since you can do this on like every other forum in the known universe.

Nice idea, but doesn't seem to work behind my company's Proxy Server.

Excellent, I'm glad you've made this tool for us. I do a lot of my trading here and most of the communication is done via PM. This will help me out a lot!

c3p0, pretty strict rules on your firewall or something wrong with the rules, it's a port 80 http call.

fisher, because that would require changes to physcial code, and we think people get more than enough email during a day. This does a heck of alot more than email does, it allows response and stores a history. Further to that emailing pms would require inner code changes to FuseTalk, something I know fusetalk is not interested in doing until they do a new build later next year. Oh, and no other on forum on the planet does this

This is actually pretty efficient. It has no CPU overhead so far and only takes ~ 20MB of memory. I don't even notice it running (aside from the system tray icon). Very nice.

As a bonus, those of us not using Windows would be able to get the emails, but not use this.

This does sound neat though, for the work.

i love how you guys treat users like 2 year olds. trips me up. "you don't need this. you don't want this." no other forum needs this, because they have a neat little option for you to get an email when you get a new private message, which works great. if you're dealing in such a high volume of PMs then i guess learn how to manage your inbox or turn it off. i'd almost swear fusetalk had this option before the last "upgrade" but honestly it's been awhile and i might be confusing it with every other forum package out there.

I dont get it, why would it be easier for you to check your PMs in your e-mail, I thought the reason for PM's is to do away with having to e-mail every offer you have. Just My $.02.

Huh? How may I ask did you draw that conclusion? I stated the reasons why, the main being that fusetalk wont be doing feature builds for awhile? How is that treating you like you are 2? Geesh. Talk about reading into words It just isn't going to happen right now, thats all
