problem accessing data

towards the end of January, I got a virus on my computer, I don't know which one. I have managed to get rid of the virus for hte most part (have put a stop to the browser hijacking) however, my desktop background has been disabled and I can't get it to come back up. That is not my main problem however. My main problem is that at the same time I got the virus, a file folder on my secondary hard drive is totally unaccessable. if I go to the file in my computer, when my cursor goes over the file, explorer.exe crashes and I get nothing. I have tried a 3rd party explorer program called "universal explorer" but this is also unable to access the file, though it doesn't crash or anything, it just tells me there is an access violation at the given address of the file. Any ideas, suggestions, or advice? I can't tell you how frustrating this is, this particular file had several gigabytes of music and video files on it which I would hate to lose.

I should also add that since getting this virus my computer has been extremely unstable. firefox, itunes, and several other programs will sporadically stop responding and will have to be restarted. Any and all help is appreciated.

has the virus been completely removed and anti virus software restored to fully functioning status on the once infected computer? the folder that has your data in, did you password protect it or make it a private folder? have you tried accessing the data in safemode? have you tried connecting that hard drive to a fully functioning and stable computer to obtain your data? another option you can try is to use bartpe to create a bootable windows cd that will allow you to access the data, or to use knoppix to obtain your data.
