Problem after problem after problem

I am having issues with my new system. I bought all of these items brand new. My problems aren't with the boot up but on the Windows XP install process from the CD. Particularly when the install is attempting to copy this file DRIVER.cab. The install would stop and then return a BSOD.

This is what I have:
Mobo = MSI k7t Turbo2
CPU = Athlon XP 1500
RAM = Crucial PC133, 256 MB
Power Supply = Antec 300w
HD = Maxtor 20gig
DVD = Toshiba 16x
NIC = 3com 10/100 nic
ANTEC server Tower

I am not quite sure where the problem is. I have attempted just about everything I could think of to resolve this. I booted up and copied the i386 folder and installed from there. This still returned the same error. I changed both the hard drive and DVD drive to other ones from my other machines and still get the same error. I attempted installing W2K but this was a failure as well. Although it didn't return the same error, I won't complete the install either. I am most certain it's a hardware issue. I just don't know where to look. It could be the motherboard or some bios conflict but I need more insight. I have read any and all relating threads in this forum and tried it out. The only thing I could do now is just return the hardware and just forget the damn project; I spent the entire weekend trying to figure things out. I seriously need some advice. thanks in advance

if you can't get a clean install on a newly formatted disk, the problem is often a case of corrupt data being processed during install. the biggest culprits are:
1) Windows CD- make sure there are no scratches
2) hard drive- try another one (as you did) to make sure its not a bad drive
3) cpu clock speed - not overclocked is it?
4) the IDE cable - try a different IDE cable for the hard drive. sometimes the new cables don't work with old drives, and vice versa.

good luck

Also, what video card are you using? I have a specific reason for asking this.

I would delete the partition using fdisk, and start over. Take out all cards except the video. Install windows xp or 2k with just the video card, then add via drivers, sound, modem, and save the lan for last. Many people have reported problems with lan cards. Also, leave the pci slot next to the agp slot open. Hope this helps.

Gururu,
I tried all that you have suggested. Brand new burned copy of XP, tried other hard drive/s, the CPU is not overclocked, and yes another IDE cable, new, the one that came with the board.

mechBgon,
Sorry, the first one I tried was a Leadtek MX 420, 64MB. I then tried an old Voodoo 3 3000. I got the same problem during the install.

o1die,
I haven't tried starting over with the partitions as I have two unused [new] Maxtor drives. Installing the VIA drivers would help if I got past the OS install.

Thanks for the responses guys. So far, since my first post, I have tried to change the power supply to a 350w Antec [from my other box], I ordered a new stick of Crucial 512MB. We'll see how this goes.

just adding one more
5) sometimes it is temps issue... saw it a couple times... CPU gets hot and you can't continue installation.
Check it also.

I'm browsing through this forum and people seem to like the Soltek SL-75DRV4 [which is selling at newegg.com for about $70]. I'm liking it myself, however, I saw this Asus VIA A7V333 KT333 [on newegg for $69, REFURB]. Any suggestions??? BTW I have an ATHLON XP 1500.
