Problem booting from a CD

Hi, I am having problems booting from my Windows XP CD. It's a newer version of XP that contains the SP2 updates. I have a CD with an older version of XP and that seems to boot up fine, so I don't know if it's a drive issue. Also, I tried the XP w. SP2 CD on two other computers and it booted up fine. The computer I am trying to install it on has the CDROM drive on SCSI and the HD on IDE. Any help would be appreciated.

i've had a similar problem, i ended up just keeping both disks and using one to to boot just for that purpose then switching out disks when it asks for you to push F6 to install third party drivers.

Thanks, I tried that but it didn't work. As I was switching out the discs it prompted me to insert the disc and press enter. I put in the new disc and pressed enter but it kept asking me to insert the disc and press enter.

Why don't you connect your CDROM to IDE...?

Also, try another CD/DVD ROM drive - there might be a problem with the drive itself...

Thanks but is there a way to hook up the CDROM to IDE? I didn't think there was.

I guess I might have to try a different drive, but I don't have one right now and I wanted to see if it was something else. Other bootable CD's work on this drive, so that's why I didn't think it was a drive problem.

I figured I would bump this thread because I am having the same problem. I tried an IDE CDROM (basic Matsushita 563 drive) and I could've sworn I was able to boot from it before, but it doesn't work now.

I tried 2 versions of XP, one regular and one with the SP2 updates, and it doesn't boot from either the SCSI or IDE CDROM drives. I have Norton Systemworks and I was able to boot from the IDE but not the SCSI.

The motherboard is a K7S5A. Please help as my system is messed up and I need to run a repair install.

Odd that it will boot the Norton cd, but not a working Windows cd.

When you press F6, it looks for the scsi drivers on a floppy.

You could always download the set of boot floppys for XP and try that.

I'm concerned that the SP2 XP disc will not boot, is it a original disc from MS, or a slipstreamed one?

One is original and one is slipstreamed. I tried them both on other systems and they both boot fine, so I'm thinking it might be something with the MB. Is there a BIOS update or something that might solve it?

okay, which revision of the motherboard do you have, it'll be printed on the motherboard itself.
I gather you meant you have 2 XP SP2 discs, and one pre SP2 disc?
also, we'll need the BIOS revision as well, it can be read when the system starts up.

Not all cdroms can read all cds or cd-rs. It's very uncommon, but does happen. Either an incompatibility with the cd-r brand, or the drive is just aging and soon fail to read other discs as well.

It says v3.1 which I assume is the revision number of the board. I checked when I started the system and it says 08/09/2002, which I assumed was the BIOS revision. I hope that's the right information.
