Well make sure there is no floppy in there, it will do that if there is one. If not make sure your BIOS settings are correct.

run memtest 86+
run manuf. hdd test utility
take out CD after first XP filecopy session
make sure HDD is jumpered master/partitioned and boot part set as active
Disable all onboaqrd stuff in bios - especially USB, onboard sound etc.
No Wireless mouse or KB - just generic cheap crap
Set HDD IDE channel in BIOS as "Large" not LBA or auto

Edit: Make sure SATA channels/booting disabled in bios (you gave no mobo info)

Hi, Sounds like a bad CD Reader since it's happening on more than one CD. CDs can have reading problems at any point on the disk. If you are reading small files it can work great, but on large files that run over the error position you get read errors etc.
Luck, Jim

if you installed the operating system with both your main (IDE) and your other (SATA) attached , I believe that the first time the computer reboots it saves a change in the Bios. Don't quote me , but I went through almost the same thing yesterday setting up a "Franken-puter" for one of my friends that didn't have a pc. And after both drives were "f-disked" and formatted , and the op-system was on the main drive it wouldn't boot with both drives attached.
Like Bozo said above , double check , and tripple check both drives connections , and the jumper settings. When you are sure that is correct , go into the Bios , and see if your bios has an "auto-detect HD" feature. There you can set drive to LBA/LARGE/NORMAL.
You have to think, any time more than one hard disk is installed , ONE HAS TO BE MASTER. Or be the first on the boot list (make sure that is the one with your OS) Good luck!!

THis may be a long shot, but have you tried another CPU?

I had similar problems a while back on a new build. I could get about 25% of the way thru the Window's install and everything would either hang or reboot. I tried everything and couldn't figure it out. Finally took it to a PC shop and they swapped out the CPU and were able to install just fine. I never thought to check the CPU cause it seemed to work up to a point. I would have thought a bad CPU would not even let the PC boot past POST.

ok...I've had run into this problem a couple of times. The first phase of installation went fine but after the first reboot, the OS can't seem to load from the HD to continue the installation. My fix is to do a fill zero (a quick fill is fine)on the HD using the manufacture diagnostic disk and reinstall the OS. Up to now, it works 5/5. I imagine there's sth stuck in the MBR of the HD that can't be earased easily from a quick format ??!!! But try this, it may help

Happy holidays people

I had this exact same problem on my recent install. It would let me select the drive in the windows install, seem to be installing to it, then not boot from it when it rebooted.

The problem was that I had selected HDD as my first boot device, but there was another spot in the bios where you select -which- hdd is the primary boot device. This had defaulted to a different hard drive, so no matter how many times it installed to the right drive, it tried to boot from the wrong one. If your bios is anything like mine (DFI SLI-DR) then you may need to set that option and tell it which HDD you want to use. Hope that helps!
