Problem installing XP

I go through the process of formatting the HDD, then it copies all the files, then it asks to reboot the system. The problem is whenever the system reboots, it just starts the whole installation process over again from the beginning. i.e. it wants to format the HDD, copy files, etc. How do I get past this?

I attempted to force the system to boot from the HDD after it asked for a reboot, but it won't do it. It says something like " put boot disk in the boot drive and press any key"

The exact message reads:

"Reboot and select proper boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected boot device and press a key"

What normally happens during a Windows XP installation:

1. System checks hardware configuration
2. Windows Setup
3. Formatting the HDD
4. Copying files
5. Asks to reboot or auto reboots in 10 seconds

The computer then restarts, but what happens next? I mean normally what happens after it reboots?

Normally after it reboots at this point. it should boot from the Harddrive and continue setup

What kind of Hardrive are you useing? Are you using a Normal setup with 1 drive or a RAID config?

Again Check your boot order in the BIOS, Some I'd say most of todays BIOS have to be set right in 2 places to boot from the Hardrive

1st place is normal Boot Order should be set to Hard drive (some BIOS let you choose exactly which HDD here some Dont)

2nd Place Is make sure you have the correct HDD set as the First Bootable drive (ie IDE0,IDE1,etc - SATA0, SATA1, etc)

After it reboots, a message states to push any key to boot from the cd device (which is the message that appears when you first pushed the button to check the hardware config and such). When it says this, don't push a button and wait until the time lapses to the point where it continues on itself. (Basically, don't touch anything and the computer will do everything itself).

If it boots from the CD-rom, it just wants to start the installation process over from the very beginning.

In bios, just make your boot sequence...

1st device : CD Rom
2nd device: HDD-0
3rd device : None
Boot from floppy : Disable

I don't touch anything. After copying the files, the system reboots, then automatically starts the installation process over again.

I'm going to throw this out on a whim but do you have another motherboard?? I had a similar situation to this, and it was because the motherboard was faulty. If you don't have a mobo, try a new harddrive cable. Like I said, this sounds silly but the least you can do is try xP.

I normally change my boot order to this at the time of XP install:

1st device: cd-rom
2nd device: disabled
3rd device: disabled
boot from floppy: disabled

"Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration"

The above message is what I get. It will only boot from the CD-rom. Shouldn't the HDD be ready to boot off of after all the files are copied to it?

I thought you needed to have the harddrive for your 2nd device so that the windows xp files will have a place to be installed. Basically, after the first portion of booting off of your cdrom drive, the 1st device is not required, since the files are then installed on the 2nd device after the reboot.
