Problem with Quotes in XHTML

I am learning HTML by using Elizabeth Castro's HTML for the WWW, 5th Edition. According to her, to use quotes in text you have to use q text /q. But when I open my pages the quotes in the paragraphs are not there. But if I type them into the text like normal, they show up!

Is the q tag obsolete and unnecessary in most browsers nowadays? My Castro 5th Edition is copyright 2003.

??????????????????????????? Thanks for your help.

use the " character for quote marks (if that's what you mean).

EDIT: trying again (the forums are interpreting the quote character as an actual quote mark). It should be "

are you talking about the quote character (") or to quote a block of text (like from a book)

in the former, you need & quot; (take out the space between the ampersand and the quot; if i leave it, it gets converted to a double quote character)
in the latter, you need <blockquote></blockquote>

Using &amp;quot; or " is one way to get the job done but there is a semantic reason for the <q> tag (as there is for everything in xhtml) and it would be ideal to use that if you can. If you're doing everything properly and it still doesn't work then it's the browser that's obsolete.

I figured it out! IE does not respond to the q tag and leaves the space blank. Firefox and Navigator do respond to the q tag. But like IE, they accept regular quote marks in your text and display them.

I guess this means the q tag is obsolete.

Do you have any idea why you're even using xhtml? Do you understand the benefits of structured documetns at all?

The purpose of a tag like <q></q> is to denote a block of text as a quotation. The purpose of a character like ", or any other quote-type character that might exist in unicode, is to provide appropriate content for your document. The whole purpose of XML is that you can do things like, say, make all your quotes in italics by applying a style to the <q> element, or search through a library for all the quotes in all your xml files.

If you have no idea at all what the purpose of structure in xml is, why are you using it at all?
