Problem with Teac 512EB IDE Burner

I installed my Teac 512EB Burner yesterday and it's acting kind of strange. I haven't tested the burn capability on it yet, but when I try to do some DAE, it only extracts at 1.2x. It's rated 14-20x for DAE. Anyone know what's up with this?

I have it installed as a secondary master. There is another, older cdrom on the chain, which used to be the master, but is now the slave. It still has no difficulty extracting at its normal speed.

I disconnected the second cdrom from the computer and DAE performance was still poor.

The drive is set to use DMA. It made no difference in DAE performance when I forced it into PIO mode.

I have used EAC .9 prebeta in secure mode (accurate stream), EAC in synchronous mode, and Nero to do the extracting. In EAC synchronous it got up to 5.0x.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I thought about flashing the firmware to see if that helped, but Teac's firmware page says that you need to have win9x/me to flash the firmware. I was going to flash anyway but I don't know how to disable the auto-insert notification in win2k.

I just got that same burner on Monday, so far I love it Haven't tried extracting with it though. I do know that in the manual it states that you're suppose to set the drive as Slave (yes, Slave ) and your CD-ROM as Master.

CloneCD turns Auto-Insert off for me automatically, so you may wanna download that. It's a great program to have anyway.

Edit: fixed emotion

Yeah, I did see that in the manual... but it still did that when I had it hooked up on its own chain as the secondary master, as shown in step 4. =)

It's suppose to be as Slave, not Master.
This probably isn't going to be the solution of the problem, but may be preventing a few others in the future.

Don't get me wrong, I greatly appreciate your input.

I don't think you understand. If I remove the second CDROM then the manual says that you have to install it as a master.
As far as the manual stating that you should install it as a slave to another cdrom, my guess is that they want you to do that so that you don't have to set jumpers on the other drive.

I went ahead and swapped master and slave jumpers anyway. It made no difference.

I'm going to call Teac in 5 minutes when they open their tech support lines and see if they have any ideas...

Apparently it's defective. They've given me an RMA for it. I hope the new one will be better. *crosses fingers*

My guess is it's the IDE performance of the board under 2k. The current VIA 4 in 1 driver has no updates in it for IDE in 2k. If you go hereyou can get the 4.29 beta drivers. This is the first set from via that has a newer IDE driver. It's still in testing and viahardware has had mixed responses on it. It should be worth a try though.

I don't think that is the problem because my other cdrom drive extracts at 8.0x (its max rating). Only the Teac drive is acting strange.

Nope, tried both the 4.28 (don't use these, they hosed my IDE stuff) and the 4.29 (works ok) and neither helped the DAE thing.

I also flashed the firmware to 2.0D. That didn't help.

Tomorrow it's in a box on its way to Teac.

The woman I talked to said that there was no way to change the speed of the extraction, and that in light of that fact, the drive was probably defective. I can only hope so...

I just purchased two of these from mwave and have had nothing but trouble. The software did not support the version of the drive so I had to upgrade that. Then I created a few coasters while doing absolutely nothing while burning (800 Tbird with 256 meg copying from a RAID 0). The audio extraction is also below specs. This is all under W2K.

Do you know of any way to flash the firmware? I am currently at B and the website says they have ver D out but the exe is only for 95, 98, and ME.

BTW the plextor on the same system has none of these problems.
