I have a radeon 9800 pro, just like this one in the article with this silver looking thing that is like a small wall around it...

http://www.ocfaq.com/reviews/ArcticCooling/VGASilencer_Rev3/

and my card is identical. I put on the paste, in fact i put on a generous amount of it just to make sure, and i get artifacts when i run ATI tool and 3dmark...

I am just wondering, what did i do wrong? I have it installed almost to EXACTLY the same way as the website mentioned above, and i have the same card too. What is goin on?

well you didnt need a generous amount i dont think....just a nice paper thin layer across the core, or just a pea sized drop in the centre so it gets ironed out flat across the core

how tightly did you fit the cooler? may of cracked the core...though i thought thats what the shim (small silver wall) is meant to stop. it may be that the shim is stopping the cooler making proper contact with the core, to get good contact you may have to remove the shim, and i have no knowledge on how to do that.

I thought the 9800 GPU's were flush with the shim? but when I installed that cooler on my AIW 9700pro, the gap between the top of the shim and the top of the GPU was uncomfortably large for me.

I easily removed the shim carefully with a razor knife and heat from a hair blow dryer and used a nice "thin" spead of AS. Without a shim, you need to be careful of the core, but the rev3 springs make it easy to get it just right when tightening it up.

yeah i think they are, but i still think the shim is still there just to stop that possible damage by crushing, his may not be flush with the core depending on the quality of the build

Slightly different, but I had 2 ATI 9600xt's running with the Artic VGA system, both are now off to RMA land.

I'm not saying that they were the cause, It could have been me or my AGP Slot frying the things...but what are the chances of identical problems on 2 different cards? I think I cracked the core on both.

Hi Zorasson,

Since I also have an ATI 9800 PRO and ordered a VGA Silencer Rev. 3 (should arrive here on monday) I was checking sites with recommendations for the installation. I Googled "vga silencer installation" and found a handful of sites with pictures and advice about the process.

One of the best I checked was a site for Mac users, there they give a complete tour about installing the VGA silencer, you can check it at:

VGA Silencer Install

I hope you can solve the issue, please post your results and keep asking for advice here, a lot of forums users have the 9800 PRO + VGA Silencer combo.

I ordered the Silencer because my card has been very hot ever since I bought it about 3 weeks ago (got it off ebay). In fact with the heatsink-fan that came with the card ATI tool reported artifacts even at stock speeds(although 3Dmark didnt showed artifacts), I had to make a "custom-made" arrangement with a 80mm fan and a small 40mm fan, the big one blowing directly at the Heatsink, and the small one blowing the backside of the card. Only after this very noisy arrangement of fans was installed ATItool stopped detecting artifacts at stock speeds. I hope that I won't have problems with the silencer, I need to stop this little oven I got for a vid card

Cheers

Quanta

The chances could be good "if" its an installation error (doing the same thing twice...expecting a different result) I'm not saying that was the issue with your particular installation.

I do know that the VGA cooler model I used was very easy to install, and I feared cracking the cores on my CPU's "far" more than the GPU on my card.

VGA Silencer Install

The only step I would add, is that to take that razor he is applying the AS with and dropping it across the shim and checking the gap to the GPU "first" to make sure it is acceptably small so that a thin layer of AS will conduct heat.

The install goes much easier on your 9800 than that Mac card too since the parts don't have to be modified. Mine does a great job of cooling.

I guess put the stk fan unit back on and make sure you did'nt fvsuck your card up. And if you did, dont say anything about warranty around here...

You could put the slightest amount of paste on the core, mount the VGA silencer, remove it, and see what kind of coverage you are getting.

i bought this little fuc*er at best buy and i know it's got the r360 core, cause when i cleaned my core it said it clear as day, so my flash wasn't a bad idea. well, looks like im gonna return it for another one, i broke my black spring clips for my mfg hs/f on my 9800 but i ripped the old ones out of my geforce 4 ti4200 and they mount it just fine, but before i mounted it i aligned the old metal shim that goes around the gpu and it looks stock as hell i'll let u guys know how it goes

good news and bad news

good news first, i got the metal shim off this time (meaning i got the new card and they are none the wiser) and was able to get the hs/f on the card. Boots fine, runs great, and has not artifacts.

Bad news, i'm only able to convert from 9800 pro to 9800 xt bios, and flash at MAX from 411 core to 420 core. With my stock cooler i could only get to 411 and with the new one on "high" settings i'm getting 420. I think i may be running on the edge of my 350 (i think) p/s though so i'm gonna take my case apart and take a look see at it.
