Problems with video

This problem started sometime between last night and this morning.

I wake up and go to get on my computer when I notice that I can't get video, I think maybe it froze so I rebooted...only I still got no video, the light on my monitor stayed orange.

So I took the video card out, dusted it off with some air put it back in and tried again, this time I got video and got all the way into windows and then boom, the video turns off and I get that orange light back. So I try rebooting it again, and still no video.

So I turn everything off and let it sit, power it up and it works again, but then the video shuts off after about 5 min. This isn't consistant though sometimes I come back after a few minutes and it still doesn't work.

What would cause this? No changes have been made recently other than adding a second windows account for my family to use, the video card fan seems to be running fine. Is this a windows problem or hardware?

After messing with it some more, it does happen about every 5 min.

I let it rest for 10 come back and then power it up and then after 5min video turns off, I get the orange light on the monitor and thats it for another 10 min or so. This happens both in windows and in bios so I am thinking that rules out a windows problem and it is probably something to do with the video card.

Suggestions as to what I could try, I guess, is what I am looking for.

Could the video card be overheating? If it has a fan, is it turning?

Yup, either that, or your mobo.
Also I didn't quite get which card it was, if its one of the stronger ones which also needs power supply, you might have a problem with that cable, or your PSU.

Yes the fan on the card seems to be working fine ie. turning.

The card is an X800XT, so yes it does need the power cable, which I have also tried changing with no luck.

Currently after trying to get into windows for my little 5 min intervals I ran atitool and had it up for like 10 min, but then same thing happened and now I can't get it to keep the video running past the inital post screens.

Tommorow I have some more free time to mess around with it, going to try to put in an old nvidia 4200 and see if I can get those drivers installed and see if it's the card or mobo.

Ok so I swapped in my old nvidia 4200 and the problem is no more.

Then I put my X800 into my old computer and after little bit (this time was onger than 5 min uptime) the monitor went blank and the orange light came on again.

So it's the video card I think. Is this an overheating issue or something different?

The fan seems to be working, although this morning it sounded like the fan bearings sounded like they were having a little trouble(but the fan still turned), and in my old computer vertical discolored lines started showing up on the screen after that first blank screen with the x800. I have a artic cooler back at my appartment (at to the parents house for spring break), should I try to install that again? I had removed it and went back to the stock cooler a while back because I wasn't overclocking and it was kinda in the way. Or is this a more serious issue and should I call up abit (its an abit x800xt) and see what they say?

I didn't check if you took this problem to the video forum as well, but if you haven't I'd strongly suggest you will.
Now as far as I see it, obviously your card is fvcked up, now you can either try remounting the artic cooler and pary that'll work (if temps are the issue, which I would seriously doubt in stock speeds, unless you didn't install the stock fan correctly).
Otherwise you can use your warranty, and make Abit send you a new/working replacement. Though you might get flamed here for doing so, since its sort of cheating, because once you OC, you void your warranty.
