Problems with WinXP Internet Sharing

Im trying to get my desktop College dorm connection shared with my laptop. i installed two nics in my desktop and enabled internet connection sharing but it doesnt work. not only does the laptop not have access, but also the desktop internet connection is servered when i plug in the crossover cable between the desktop and laptop. any suggestions?

are you enbling the ICS on the proper net connection, it needs to be enabled on the connection that actually goes to internet, not the one that goes to the laptop... having it set on the one that goes to the laptop might sever the desktop's connection...

yeah, i enabled ICS on the Internet connection, so that's not the problem

has anyone been able to use WinXP ICS to share a university LAN connection? it says in the ICS help file that it isn't supposed to be used with static ip configurations or in environments that have Win2K domain controllers. but i don't see how a static ip would affect it, and since im not on a domain, why would the domain controllers make a difference?

What is your IP configuration? Everything needs to be 192.168.0/24 with the ICS host being 192.168.0.1. You need to make sure everything is in the same workgroup also(ie WORKGROUP).

Can you ping your laptop?

the lan nic on the desktop has 192.168.0.1 and the internet nic has the ip assigned by the university. the laptop was assigned a private ip via dhcp (i think it was 192.168.0.157 last time). both are on the same workgroup, so they can share files. the problem is that when i connect the laptop and desktop, the internet connection is severed, as though the desktop doesn't understand that one nic is used for internet commuinication and the other only for private lan communication.

pinging the laptop and/or desktop was successful as the connection between the laptop and desktop was made. but neither could ping anything outside the private network (the 192.168...).
