I was setting up a little computer for my daughter from some old stuff that I had. I had an 1800 + athlon and a kg7a raid board. I put everything together. and it posted fine, went into cmos and monitored temps, everthing was great. When I restarted it wouldnt post anymore. I was using a copper heatsink for the athlon but noticed it was kinda tight. I decided to throw a 1.3 ghz processor in there and same thing. Posted once then restart and thats it nothing.

I then took an old aluminum heatsink and a 1.2 ghz and it works great. I tried to use the aluminum heatsink on those first two processors but im thinking they are damaged. Is it possible I shorted them out or something??

any help would be great.

It is possible you might have physically damaged the cores and the act of powering them up and making them hot just tipped them over the edge.

The Athlon XP required very careful installation of the heatsink because of the exposed core. Most people used shims to reduce the risk of damage.

Check your cmos jumper and be sure it's in the right position (normal, not clear). Also, be sure you have the cpu heatsink fan plugged into the right header. Some boards have 2 of them in the same proxsimity.

And some people used shims that were too tall and as a result killed their CPU.

Could be a power supply issue...If you unplug the power supply (turn off, remove plug and disconnect 20pin to board) for like 10 minutes and then reinstall does it work....I had one like this...

Seems like any damage caused by improper installation of the heatsink would be visible. Did you notice any tiny chips or abrasions on the edges/corners of the die? If not then I'd have to go with motherboard or PSU issues.

But wouldn't the CPU show signs of death? With no temp montoring I would assume the chips would burn up leaving some kind of a burn mark or smell. If it doesn't look dead it probably isn't.
