Processor for video editing

I am going to build a new machine specifically for video editing. Any recommendations for the processor?

I would say go with Intel for video encoding. Since you are building a new system I would say go with the LGA775 platform. If you can afford it the 3.6 is a good choice.

intel doesnt own amd at encoding anymore. with socket 939, amd has caught up at encoding, so it's not a problem.

still, i'd have to say get an intel because of the hyperthreading. just knowing that u will be video editing tells me that you will need better multi-tasking. if it were me, i'd still side with the amd. i have no trouble with it's multi-tasking.

Granted, it's not a very fair comparison, but my A64 939 @ 2.5 slams the door on my old P4 @ 3.1. The A64 gets 50-60fps encoding to xvid while the P4 managed 25-30.

If I am reading that graph correctly, that lower is better, then I don't think its that accurate or they were using a poorly optimized video codec.

At the moment, I have an A64 3200 with 1GB DDR333 s754, 60GB 7200rpm hdd, in my notebook. I've been making digital copies of all my DVDs that I had to leave behind at home when I joined the USAF. (Beats finding room for 30 odd DVDS in my suitcases and shipping charges.) Anyway, my A64 notebook encoding times, using DivX 5.12 and 192 VBR MP3, are about 4 hours 45minutes, depending on the length of the movie. Troy took the longest time, just under 6 hours. And I always encode my movies at the highest quality possible.

I've got a P4 2.4C@2.88 at home, but I'm not in a position to encode on that machine for comparison right now.

A64s can encode video very well when they are using an optimized codec.
