Processor upgrade in BH6 motherboard

I would like to upgrade the CPU in my PC with something a little faster. I only have a Pentium II 350 in an Abit BH6 motherboard. I've had this system for about 3 years now. Will this motherboard accept a coppermine slot 1 processor? The FAQ at Abit's website says they don't recommend it but will it work anyway? I don't want to overclock or try to get a slotket to fit, just get an 800 or 850 MHz slot 1 PIII to tide me over for another year or so.

well I use a p3-550 coppermine with slocket in my abit bh6 and it works fine. I don't know about the slot 1 if it works or not however.

I have heard of BH6 users who got up to the PIII 1Ghz Slot 1 to work (that CPU is horribly expensive and not worth it). With a slocket you can take a Celeron 1.1 and probably a Pentium III 1.1 (100fsb) though I don't know of any BH6 users who have tried that yet. With the Powerleap adapter the BH6 can take a tualatin Celeron 1.2.

I'm also using a P3-550 with a slocket. My board is Rev1.02. Works great. I can't get to over clock too far though. It has to do with the multiple for the video card. Good luck.

You can use any 100 MHz FSB Celeron or PIII up to 1.1 GHz. A FC_PGA version will need a Slocket.

I'm using a FC-PGA PIII 900 (100 Mhz) without a problem on an Abit slotket III in a BH-6 Rev. 1.0.

If I was upgrading now I would get the powerleap adapter with the celeron 1.2 GHz.

Powerleap Celeron 1.2 GHz

That seems best if you don't want to change motherboards.

I stopped keeping track of the latest and greatest hardware a couple of years ago. It was too expensive. Maybe somebody could answer this question for me, if the new celerons are on the 100MHz FSB and have 256k of L2 cache aren't they fundamentally just like the PIII's then? If that's the case, I guess I'll get a better deal if I get that Powerleap Celeron dealy. Now I'll have to read up on all this stuff again.

It's better. I've just read an article talking about that. It addressed the issue of whether this was smart thing for Intel. I just ordered the Celeron 1.1 yesterday. It should be here in a few days. Reading the "Old Fart" post motivated me to do it. I compared the cost difference and cpu gain of the powerleap+celeron 1.2 vs. slotkit+celeron 1.1, it didn't seem like it was worth it. I also ordered a new slotkit in case the one I am using for my celeron 533 is not fcpga compatible. I'll post on how the upgrade goes.

On a different note, DIRECTV owners now can receive all their local channels in 41 markets. Check your on-screen guide.

I would just go with a slocket and a new Clereron. Threre is reallly no worry about having the slocket "fit", I used one with a Cleron in a BH6 for quite a while. P3's are way overpriced.

One of the kids PC's is a BH6 with a C1000 @ 1120. Runs nice. I've got lots of mileage out of that mobo.

What should my settings be for the celeron 1.1?

CPU Operating Speed:
Turbo frequency:
Ext. Clock (PCI):
Multiplier Factor:
SEL100/66# Signal:
AGPCLK/CPUCLK:
L2 Cache Latency:
Speed Error Hold:

CPU Power Supply:

CPU Operating Speed: user define
Turbo frequency: (this sets the FSB to 103 instead of 100 when enabled)
Ext. Clock (PCI):
Multiplier Factor: 11
SEL100/66# Signal: high
AGPCLK/CPUCLK: 2/3
L2 Cache Latency: doesn't matter
Speed Error Hold: enabled

CPU Power Supply: 1.75

OK I got my parts from googlegear yesterday: Celeron 1.1 and SOYO slotkit. I followed the instructions and installed them in my computer. The initial setting I used were:

CPU Operating Speed: user define
Turbo frequency: disabled
Ext. Clock (PCI): 100
Multiplier Factor: 11
SEL100/66# Signal: high
AGPCLK/CPUCLK: 1/1
L2 Cache Latency: Default
Speed Error Hold: enabled

CPU Power Supply: 1.75

But when I saved and rebooted, the computer halted after detecting the CDROM. So I turned the speed error hold off. Then everything booted fine with 1100 MHZ!
When windows finished booting. I checked the reported CPU speed was 1068 MHZ. I didn't know exactly what it should be, but it seemed close enough for me. I then started to play a game to test out the system. Within a minute, and the computer locked up and the screen went black. I Hard rebooted and set the AGPCLK/CPUCLK to 2/3. Then played the game again, and it didn't crash for an hour. So I rebooted once more, and set the Turbo frequency to enable. The computer still booted at 1100 MHZ, but windows reported the CPU speed to be 1118MHz! So now I am happy! The old bh6 lives on!

Hope some people may find my experience helpful in upgrading their own system.
