Program => Turn mp3 into text

Is there a program available that will let me input an mp3 file and have it output the text from the file?

Basically, if I record myself reading a paragraph from a book, I want to be able to take my recording, and have it change (output) into text.

I've seen programs that can take text and record it to mp3 format, I want to go in the opposite direction.

the only thing that comes to mind is naturally speaking dictation. you talk, it types type of thing.

I just looked up Dragon/Powerscribe and it doesn't accept an mp3 file to convert it to text.

I don't think you can really do what you want to do.

The only thing you can do is to play the audio file to a speech recognition program (like Powerscribe). You just can't load up the file and get the text some seconds later. it doesn't work like that.

You'd need to play the whole thing to the program and hope for the best. Depending on the quality of the speech recognition program and the audio in the file, you'll get mixed results.

Vista also includes speech recognition which works decently, but it's not plug and play. Specially since most Speech recognition programs expect stuff like 'period' or 'comma', or 'space' during the dictation processes...unless the audio file you are working with was recorded with speech recognition in mind...it'll be tough.

This won't be plug-and-play. If you want the speech recognition software to transcribe, say, a class or lecture you recorded, you are pretty much out of luck. The technology is just not there yet.

It can work fine in an isolated environment in which you are dictating stuff to the program and know how to do it. A random recording? I don't really think it'll work.

I didn't think it was possible, but hoped it might be.

Sounds like the only thing I can do is play the song and let the computer listen to it in order to convert it to text.
