Prom Night in Mississippi

Just watched this on HBO. A movie that makes you think.

In 1997, Academy Award winning actor, Morgan Freeman, who lives in the Charleston, Mississippi community, offered to fund the first-ever integrated Senior Prom in the history of Charleston's one high school. His offer was ignored. In 2008, Morgan offered again... the East Tallahatchie County School Board accepted. In this town of 2,300 people, its high school of 415 black and white students has, to this day, always had separate proms: one black, one white prom. Our film follows the Charleston High senior class of 2008 preparing and attending their historic, first integrated prom, in the context of strong emotions, traditions, and conflict inherent in race relations in the community, and in the deep south. Some of the white parents maintained their whites-only prom

Seriously, I thought it was mostly over. I know there are still radicals, but I didn't expect an entire town of radicals.

In 2007 Dallas ISD was certified as being fully intergrated("the root and branch of segergation fully destroyed"). As of Jan 2009, minority enrollment is over 90%.

Urban school districts are just as segerated as ever and theres nothing that can be done about that.

Likewise, if its not sanctioned(ie put on/paid for) by the state, its "acceptable". In qoutes...

In all likelyhood(without doing any research), parents were responsible for funding, planning and putting on the two proms. They self-segregated.

No one raises a stink because there's not really anything they can do. afaik, the segregated proms aren't endorsed by the schools. They are more like a private party where the organizers can invite whomever they want. Legally, there's nothing wrong with that.

No one raises a stink because there's not really anything they can do. afaik, the segregated proms aren't endorsed by the schools. They are more like a private party where the organizers can invite whomever they want. Legally, there's nothing wrong with that.

There is only a problem since there is a white only problem in the scenario. If there was a black only prom there would be be not stink at all. There would be some BS that it is culturally significant and it brings them back to their roots.

What is wrong with being separate at times? If someone has a guys night out our a girls night out does that make them sexist? Are senior citizen functions considered age discrimination? It is human nature to want to be around people that you identify with more. People can relate to each other on multiple levels. It can be anything from race, age, sex, sexuality, family, hobbies, or even professions. It sucks when you are excluded, but it is easy to understand when you are included.

Why does everything have to be about hate? Can't someone be separate and tolerant at the same time? Sometimes it is just nice to be around people who have the same interests or value things that are important to you. Before anyone flames me I am not exclusively talking about race.

In this day and age, we as a nation of people that are pursuing equality for everyone, shouldn't condone this. By doing so it only shows that there is an underlying problem of racism, but we just turn a blind eye to it.

I understand your view on the "separation" of people/cultures at times. But that can still be done in an atmosphere of integrated races/cultures. You hang out with your friends and I can hang out with mine. Also what if I, as a black man, had a white girlfriend and wanted to take her to my black only prom?

I swear. Also, racism is not common down here, at all. You may like to think so, but it isn't. Yes, the segregated prom is ridiculous, and yes, Morgan Freeman's a baller. But all these "dumb racist southerners" comments are just idiotic.

It's pathetic that the extreme racist line of thought still exists so prominently. My dad lives in Georgia, and a black family started going to their church (who at the time was all white) and a LOT of the families refused to go to that church anymore. People are just completely terrible.
