It doesn't.

I live in Jackson, MS. I have never been to Charleston, MS where this was filmed. This must be somewhere near the delta b/c things are a lot different there.

I agree that a seperate prom is rediculous, but this is the first time I have ever heard anything like this and I lived in MS my entire life. I like Morgan Freeman, but this makes it seem like all of MS does this and we do not.

In a way most of the country self segregates itself. Middle to Upper class people move to school systems in neighborhoods where lower class people can't afford therefore they don't get into their school system.

In Jackson where I live people don't send their kids to public schools if they are middle to upper class. They send their kids to private schools that can cost upwards of 10K year. If they do go to public schools its in the suburbs where the cities have building codes that don't allow houses under 2000 square feet and strict neighborhood covenants on renting your home... see Madison, MS.

I feel this documentary was very one-sided. There is racism on both fronts in the south. One of the first cases of reverse-racism was reported in Noxubee County Mississippi.

I don't like the way things are and how they have become, but I feel like if I moved anywhere out of the south I'd be stereotyped as a racist... how is that any different than the people who think people from the south stereotype black people?

Yes, it does. I fly in to Florida when I visit my dad (or Atlanta, it varies) and the racism is visible EVERYWHERE. People won't sit near each other, go into the bathroom at the same time, etc. The OP is about an entire damn school that is still set in it's racist ways. Did you also miss the part I mentioned about the church?

No, not all southerners are racist, but racism between black and white people is more likely to occur in the south. I'm really not sure why someone would choose to live in the area to begin with.

I hate that ignorant term. Racism is rasicism. Technically wouldn't "reverse-racism" imply no racism instead of the same damn thing.

You don't know SHIT.

I have lived in the south my entire life. I have traveled the world including a good portion of this country. The south is no more racist than the rest of the country. The difference is in the south there are more interactions between different races.

Want to know why? We all live together. My high school was 50/50 black and white. We all lived with one another. I currently live in an upper middle class neighborhood in south carolina. Blacks are equally represented in my neighborhood. There is no great white flight here. Why? Because there is no where to hide.

You can't hide from black people in the south. Oh but in California, you can hide all right. That black person moves into your neighborhood, you can move to another all white neighborhood. That doesn't exist in the south. You won't find all white neighborhoods here.

You are talking about of your ass. Do you here about more racist incidents coming out of the south? Yes based PURELY on the numbers. More blacks live in the south. We have racists in the south just like there are racists in the north. The difference is that in the south, we all live together. In the north, you keep your blacks in the inner city.

i went to inner city high school....

it was innergrated to the point where we had national guard there. also there was always a police officer or two walking around...and there was a special black counselor that was a black student advocate, much like al sharpton...he was fired for hosing a few of the whitey girls of underage.

in all that bs...my class was one of the highest in NM Scholars... Regan came to speak there...he ate cheese and crackers with mayo

I agree it's an ignorant term and I didn't create it, but to most people in this country racism can is only one sided in whites being racist to blacks.

Fair enough. But you're kinda guilty of the same thing. There's no "white neighborhood" in Ca, either. True, there aren't many blacks outside of central or south central LA, but good luck living anywhere in the state that isn't a healthy mix of races. West side LA? Persians, arabs and indians, with the more ubiquitous asians and mexicans. Orange county? Asian and mexican, predominantly, with south OC being probably the most whitewashed of all. The list goes on....

The great white flight is well documented is many parts of the country. It doesn't happen as much now. But it happened much less in the south because there was no where to go.

In the south, we have mexicans, asians, indians. Just like everywhere else. Just different numbers. In the south, it is a lot of blacks and white. But we still have other races represented.

My only point is that in the south, integration was much more forced because people couldn't escape it like in other parts of this country. It is easy to say integrate when there are no blacks your kids will integrate with. It needed to happen and my generation is the first to realize the benefits.

Wow, I had no idea stuff like this was still going on. Racist idiots FTL.

Seriously, I thought it was mostly over. I know there are still radicals, but I didn't expect an entire town of radicals.

In 2007 Dallas ISD was certified as being fully intergrated("the root and branch of segergation fully destroyed"). As of Jan 2009, minority enrollment is over 90%.

Urban school districts are just as segerated as ever and theres nothing that can be done about that.

Likewise, if its not sanctioned(ie put on/paid for) by the state, its "acceptable". In qoutes...

In all likelyhood(without doing any research), parents were responsible for funding, planning and putting on the two proms. They self-segregated.

that only sounds bad until you realize the surrounding area is 90% minority. its hard to equalize whit-to-black when there is predominantly more of one or the other in the area.
